Handset Searching for Base

I have a problem with this AT&T 5840, The Handset for no reason finds itself searching for the base unit. There are times I'm right next to the base and I will pick it up and press the button and it will start to search. After searching sometimes it finds the base some times it goes to a blank screen and never returns until I put it in the cradle. It's a nice looking phone but this is become a real proble If I dont get a solution in the can it goes.

SOURCE: tring to add a handset

The process is called "Registering."

From another fixya post:

1. Make sure to charge the handset battery pack at least 12 hours.
2. Using the soft keys on the base located below the base screen, press MENU.
3. Use the up or down arrow keys to select DISPLAY BASE ID.
4. Press OK. The base screen will display the 15-digit Base ID
code for about 30 seconds, then the unit returns to the idle
screen. Write down the Base ID code on a piece of paper.
5. At the cordless handset, use the soft key to select NEW.
6. Enter the 15-digit Base ID code using the number keypad.
7. Use the soft key to select OK. The screen displays PLEASE
WAIT!.
8. After about 45 seconds, the screen displays FOUND BASE. If the handset displays BASE BUSY TRY LATER, the base is in
use.

Phone says searching

Bring the handset that says searching into the same room as the base and see if the handset stops searching. Next unplug the handset batteries (yes from all handsets) and the base power cord (from both the base and the wall outlet). Wait a few minutes and then reconnect the batteries and base power cord. Next try to de-register and then re-register the handsets. (If you add a comment with the phone model, I'll help you with this step. Uniden has the manuals for their phones on their site: http://www.uniden.com/bin/venda?ex=co_disp-view&bsref=uniden&scat=dectphones_mnl .)

If this doesn't help, next try a new battery (and make sure that the battery is fully charged) for the phone. (If the phone is under warranty, contact Uniden. Note: batteries lose their ability to hold a charge over time. This includes the time on the shelf in the package.)

If a new battery doesn't help, then there is something wrong with the handset. Decide if it is worth having the unit fixed if the phone is out of warranty.

I hope this helps.

(I'm assuming that both handsets are cordless. If you have a corded/cordless model, then check that the base has power before you go farther with the above diagnostics. The power brick should be warm. We had a cordless phone on a power strip (UPS) that got turned off. The handset was searching for a signal that wasn't being sent. If you have power to the base, try sending the Find Handset message. The problem could be either the base or the handset not sending and receiving the signals between them.)

Hi,

This is because of the following reasons

1.The handset is far away from the base unit.Try to bring the hand set near the base unit and try.
2.The base unit is not plugged in to the power supply. Please check it.

Handset won't connect to base unit

Try placing the handset in the base unit to register it. Then see if it is found by the base.

Handset reads "searching"

The reason the handset says "Searching" is because it can not find its Base Station. What handset works with a notebook? I had not heard of such a thing.

Phone says searching

The battery may be weak. Or it is too far from the base. Try exchanging the two. take the handset near the base and see if it will link.
