My canon 20d stopped taking photos for no aparant reason. Kept getting error 99 and when I re insert the battery it starts clicking on it's own whether turned on or not. I sent it to Canon repair who wanted to charge me more than it was worth to repair but that was before they even started to analyse the problem. I decided to buy a brand new 20d. Put in the battery and the CF card and exactly the same thing has happened. I can get the cameras to come on but when I press the buton the flash jumps up and it says busy. I cannot get anything on the screen on either camera live view or menu etc. I have bought a new CF card in case it was that but all still the same. So I have 2 cameras doing exactly the same and I just don't know what to do HELP

If two cameras are doing it, I would suggest the contacts on your lens are dirty.

Try the following diagnosis steps for solving ERR 99 issues : -

To isolate the cause of the issue, do the following: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Remove the lens, battery, and CF card.
3. Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes.
4. Insert only a fully charged battery, and turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the “ERR 99" message appear? If so, the camera may be faulty and requires a service. If it does not, then: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Insert the CF card.
3. Turn on the camera.
4. Format the CF card in the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the “ERR 99" message appear? If so, then the CF card is faulty. Try a different card. If the message does not appear: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Clean the gold contacts on the lens by GENTLY rubbing them with a pencil eraser or soft cloth. Keeping the camera face pointing down, also clean the gold contacts on the camera, being careful that you do not let any debris fall into the camera body.
3. Reattach your lens.
4. Turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

If the “ERR 99" message only appears when one particular lens is attached, then that lens should be examined by a service technician.
If you see the “ERR 99" with a different Canon lens attached, then the camera is faulty and should be serviced.

Err99 when taking pics in sun. Taking in side with flash fine, pics outside at night are fine?

Error code 99 indicates detection of a system malfunction. Try switching on the camera and while it is still switched on remove the battery. Leave it for about 30 secs then re-insert the battery once powered up switch the camera off wait 30 secs then switch it on again. This action sometimes will remedy this problem but failing that it may need a visit to the repair shop.

Canon 20D gone shutter crazy , clicking away on its own error code 99

The Canon 20 D is a fantastic camera but the weak point is the shutter it last about 70 to 80,000 actuation then causes a bunch of problems. In Canada it cost about $180.00 including the shipping to the repair depot to get it fixed.

I got error 099, before I was getting error 05. and the flash dos not open canon EOS 20D

I also get the error 99 message and cannot take any photos... I have been able to solve this problem by taking out the batterys and wiping down the connectors on both the batterys and the connecters in the motordrive with a lens cloth. keep the lens cloth on hand when shooting. It may be that either oils, or dirt has gotten onto the connectors. I hope this helps.

Error in body

Remove lens, CF card, and battery. Leave in a dry and slightly warm place for 24 hours. Clean lens contacts with a cloth or cue tip and eclipse/alcohol.
If the camera doesn't turn on after this, even without CF card and lens attached, then it needs to go to a Canon service centre. Don't tell them you got it wet, and maybe it will get repaired FOC.

Error 99

I get error 99 sometimes on my 20 D but it?s usually to do with a lens that is attached. Sigma lens have been known to cause error's. If it's not that or dirty contact on the lens then it could be a more serious problem. I would at least check it out with a canon dealer/repair centre.
