What is the best kind of mattress for someone with a bad back? I suffer a great deal from back pain and am hoping to find a mattress that will help alleviate some of my aches and pains.

There are many mattresses advertised for people with back problems. I can understand your frustrations. My husband suffers from severe back pain. We bought a Tempur-pedic mattress and it has helped him tremendously. This does not mean that it will be the best mattress for you though. I suggest speaking first with your doctor. If you still need some help, do your homework. I have a found a video that I will send you on how to buy a mattress if you have back problems - maybe you will find it helpful.

Sleeping on your back

If you sleep on your back, place a pillow under your knees to help maintain the normal curve of your lower back. You might try a small, rolled towel under the small of your back for additional support. Support your neck with a pillow.

Sleeping on your stomach

Sleeping on your stomach can be ******* your back. If you can't sleep any other way, reduce the strain on your back by placing a pillow under your pelvis and lower abdomen. Use a pillow under your head if it doesn't place too much strain on your back. If it does cause strain, try sleeping without a pillow under your head.

Sleeping on your side

By making simple changes in your sleeping position, you can take strain off your back. If you sleep on your side, draw your legs up slightly toward your chest and put a pillow between your legs. Use a full-length body pillow if you prefer.

I have a bad back and my friend told me I should be sleeping on a hard mattress. Is there any truth to this?


First I suggest speaking with your doctor; he/she may have a certain recommendation. Ultimately, if you suffer from back problems, you should be looking for a mattress that will give you the right kind of support; which doesn't always mean getting the hardest mattress.

Should I buy a firm or a soft mattress?


The comfort level of a mattress changes in each and every person. I personally prefer the firm mattress because it makes cures my back aches and make them go away in the morning after.

It is very important that when you go to the store to buy a new mattress you should lay down and really exam if it is comfortable enough for you and if it suit you right.
