Says blank DVD-RW is not formatted, then formats -- then error

Toshiba D-VR4XSU VCR/DVD Recorder

I've had this unit for about 6 months and finally had a chance to play with recording on DVD.

Never did this before, but I CAN follow the manual's directions!

I put in a new disc, DVD-RW, selected video mode, and was about to look at the next step in the manual when a message came up telling me the disc was not formatted, and did I want to format it.

Hmmm. That wasn't in the manual! Figuring there wasn't much choice if I was going to get anywhere, I selected yes to format it. It took a few minutes. Afterwards I followed the rest of the steps to set up the timer.

Then I got a message to insert a recordable disc. ??! The newly formatted disc was already in there! I ejected it, slid it back in, and got an "incorrect disc" message.

What's going on? Anyone know?

I have same TOSHIBA D-VR4XSU VCR/DVD RECORDER. According to the
manual, you (COULD) can use for recording: DVD-RAM, DVD-RW and DVD-R (see page 50). WRONG!!! I bought all 3 types of discs, but after few
weeks I got same experience you got now. Just type DVD-R works. The other
types were - wasted money and a lot of time trying to finalize the disc. I had to
throw all into the garbage. Try DVD-R and you should?? be O.K.

My Magnavox Digital Disc Recorder & Video Cassette Recorder will not play DVD-RW discs. How can I solve this problem or get a replacement unit.

It claims to play -RWs finalized in DVD-VIDEO format, not VR. If a disc is recorded/finalized on a different recorder, not all players can play it. This is the price we pay for the convenience of the digital system.

Why won't the DVD-RW disks FORMAT? I've seen others with the same problem with formatting multiple types of disks... Please help.

If you are using a Sylvania DV220SL8 DVD Player \ VCR combo (which this question is posted under the heading of) there is a very simple reason why you can't format DVD-RW disks. DVD Players can't do that. You need a DVD Recorder to format DVD's.

This applies to all comments under this heading as well. You can not record if the unit you're using does not have that capability. And this unit does not have it. You can record with the VHS VCR, but the DVD Player is just that... A Player. It's not a Recorder.

I have Toshiba D-VR660KU, I've copied several VHS

you need to finalize the disc or "make compatable" or "close session". basically the disc needs to be finished off to be able to play on any dvd player. dvd-r will normally play on any player as it is the standard format dvd discs. dvd+r/rw discs do not need to be finalized, but don't play on all machines.

I am trying to record from cable tv to dvd and also dub a vcr tape to dvd. i've tried both dvd -r and +r. do i need to format these disks first, also when done do i need to finalize and or make compatible....

DVD-R and DVD+RW and +R are automatically formatted. DVD-WR can be formatted in VR or Video mode Finalization is necessary for -rw and dvd-r, but only recommended for dvd+rw and dvd+r

Some blank DVD+R discs will not read on my DVD player

The JVC DR-MV1S DVD Recorder / VCR Combo does not suppport DVD+R, only DVD-R, -RW etc.
At least mine only supports these formats, as when I first bought mine, I got some blank DVD's they were DVD+R.
I recorded a movie onto one on my PC, then tried playing it in the JVC unit... no go!
Instruction manual (available for D/load online) proved to me that I could not play +R disks!!

Dvd do not record

The unit is saying that its an "Un-format disc" problem. Is this the only error code you are getting? Also, what types of DVDs are being used? As in, DVD-R DVD-RW DVD+R DVD-RW and what speeds? 1x 2x 4x 8x 16x?
