Our DVD player plays CDs, but will not play DVDs. We have had the DVD player for about four years, and it has always worked great.
The trouble began a few days ago. We had a movie paused. When I went to unpause it, the movie began for a second and then stopped. The DVD player has not worked since.
We have tried different DVDs, but the result is the same. It tries to "read" the disc for an unusually long time. Then, the DVD player displays "no play." And the following message is displayed on the television screen: "This type of disc cannot be played. Please insert a different disc." As I said before, it still plays CDs.
Thank you in advance for any help that you can give,
I had a similiar problem. Go into the onscreen menu with the remote using the "ACTION" button on the bottom left of the remote. Using the arrow keys in the center of the remote, move to the menu for the audio processing. It will have menu items for DTS, Dolby Digital etc. Change the menu parameters for the "Down conversion" to "yes", get out of the menu mode and see if your DVD works again. If not, make sure there is no DVD or CD in the player, and press the "open/close", "pause" and the double left pointing arrow buttons all at the same time for about 5 seconds until the display on the DVD player says "INITIALIZE". This resets your machine.
I hope this helps you.

I would advise you to return the unit to where you bought it from and get an exchange unit. There appears to be a laser problem here - the DVD laser is defective - that's why you can only play CD's! (:-)
If the unit plays CDs but not DVDs, then the LED for DVDs is burned out. There are separate LEDs for CD and DVD operation.
If neither plays, there is a more fundamental problem. In any case, only factory service will correct the problem with your "white elephant".
I have exactly this model.
Are you trying to playing recordable DVDs (DVD+R or DVD-R) ? if so, try playing original DVDs (the type you rent or buy) those are pressed DVDs - if it works, then your player does not support DVD-R or DVD+R - If you are using a computer burner that supports bitsetting you can change the booktype of a DVD+R to DVD-ROM to fool your player.
If however your player cannot play either DVD-R, DVD+R nor original DVDs and only plays CDs, then your dvd laser diode is finished - there is one for CD and one for DVD, this is rare but happens, there is nothing you can do, any repairs would be very expensive - you are better off getting a new DVD player they are very inexpensive now and any repairs will cost you multiple times a new DVD player.
If the lens is clean (clean with cotton swab and alcohol), then the optics are failing. DVDs require more power and accuracy to be read than CDs. The ability to read CDs but not DVDs is usually a good indication that the optics are starting to fail.
