Depending on weither you engage it by a button or a lever, i can help you. For the lever engagement you just make a complete stop, fully pull the lever into 4 high, and drive the vehical backward and foward several times. If you have problems with the button engaugement, it could mean you have a vacuum leak.

1992 gmc truck 1500 is making a knocking noise...just bought it dont know where to start 1 fuse was bad replacinv it . . The oil dip stick reads good...it looks like theres not much oil when I pull off...

Check oil pressure.

As a test, you might try a heavier weight oil (SAE 50 diesel) to see if the knock goes away. Just drain and put in 4 to 5 Qts. No need to change filter.

My truck starts fine but as misses when driving

The trouble shooting section in the Chilton/Haynes repair manual that covers your truck will lead you to most likely through least likely reasons for this stumble while running. I just checked my own repair manual (1992 GMC Sonoma). Most likely problem is in HEI system. I would suggest a full tune-up if one hasn't been done in memory, if at all. (My father-in-law bought a couple used cars that had misfire codes. Pulled the plugs and found they had NEVER been replaced in over 100,000 miles.) Replace plugs, wires, distributor cap etc. Be sure the plugs are gapped correctly, etc. Best of luck with your GMC. The bad news about these newer GMCs. I had to get a special wobble-socket and take the front tires off of my truck to change the front 2 spark plugs. You have to go through this little hatch type opening in the inner fender well to access them. What a bummer.

Transmission

If you are on a hill try to back up (or go forward) slightly, put the brake on firmly, and then try to put it in park. If your GMC has 4 wheel drive but is not clearly in 2 or 4 whell drive this sometimes keeps it from going into Park. Good liuck

I just bought a 1999 gmc yukon,I got it home and put it in park and now I can't get it to release into drive. I get more it from park. I checked everything. Can you give me some advise

Your vehicle has a "brake-transmission interlock". In Fords they have a spot where you can stick a key or screwdriver in a certain location to over ride the switch if it fails. I did not see anything in the owners manual as well as the service manual as far as that kind of thing. As a matter of fact I didn't even see a fuse for the switch but just scanned through so may have missed it. I took a couple of snap shots from the owners manual on what to do if your vehicle won't shift out of park (see below). This should be in your owners manual if you have one. if you do not have one and would like a copy, feel free to email me at [email protected] with your make, model and year and I will be happy to email you a copy. Like I said I quickly looked through the fuse diagrams but didn't see anything so I'm not sure if the interlock is manual or has an electronic switch so you may want to check your fuses (Fords are electric). You may also want to look up the shaft of the brake pedal for any kind of a mechinism or switch to see if you can somehow over ride this. I wish I could be more help but hope this helped you some and good luck. Here are your snap shots:

2001 ford f150 supercrew 4x4......4 wheel drive will not engage???

There is a special sequence for that. Let me see if I can remember... Pull to a level surface, put the parking barake on, put the truck in neutral, shift to four-wheel drive, release the brake, shift to drive.

The computer waits for this sequence. It has been many years since I did this. If it doesnt work, call your dealer shop and they will tell you the correct sequence.
