My kitchen bar stools are amazing as far as style and comfort are concerned; however they are slightly too tall. Is there a way for me to keep these stools and simply shorten them a little?

Absolutely. You can shorten a bar stool without too much difficulty. I have found a great 5-step guide that will help you through this project. Hope is works out for you, would be a shame to lose your bar stools.

What is a standard kitchen counter depth?

Counter depth is key to functional, comfortable kitchen design. Standard dimensions keep cabinetry within reasonable size for average-height users, and in relation to common sink and appliance sizes, but guidelines allow for slight or moderate changes. The countertop overhang plays a couple of roles and affects counter depth.
Standard lower, or base, cabinets are 24 inches deep, while upper, or wall, cabinets are 12 inches deep. Countertops typically overhang their base cabinets by about 1 inch, or at least 3/4 inch beyond the drawer fronts and cabinet doors. The overhang helps keep crumbs and spills from getting into drawers and cupboards below and completes the comfortable cabinetry contour that includes a 3-inch-deep toe kick on the floor. Island or bar-style overhangs often extend about 15 inches or more to create knee space for people seated at the bar. Deep overhangs require bracing, which may be provided by brackets, legs or even a steel plate underneath the countertop.

Should I opt for leather or fabric upholster seating for my bar stools?

It really depends on what you want out of you bar stools but I highly recommend leather. Leather is far more durable and ages well. Leather covering is less likely to scratch/tear, and its natural finish should provide some amount of waterproofing so liquid should rest on the surface long enough for you to clean it.

I am looking to buy some bar stools for my kitchen island. Are there different types I can choose from or a standard type?

Bar stools come in three fundamental varieties: bar stools with arms and backs, stools with backs only and backless stools.

How can I keep my outdoor wooden bar stools from rotting?

You should seal the stools with a water sealant at least once a year. After rain/morning dew/humidity, make sure to wipe moisture from your bar stools with a lint-free cloth. When not in use, cover your bar stools with a protective cover to ensure longevity.

I have a few swivel bar stools in my kitchen but two of them are squeaking, how can I fix them?

First turn the stool on its side and check all the bolts on the legs. If they are ok, rest the bar stool upside down so you can get a look at the underneath of the seat. Check the bolts there too. Once you are sure all bolts have been tightened return the stool to its upright position. Next you will need a can of high quality lubricant which you will need to apply to any squeaking area.

Are kitchen bar stools any different from commercial (pubs/bars) bar stools?

Essentially, there is no difference in the function of the stool; however the height varies slightly. Kitchen bar stools are 23-28 inches from floor to seat whereas commercial bar stools measure 29-32 inches.
