Question about Samsung HCN4226W 42" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television

2 Answers

Convergence problem? I have a HCN4426W Samsung projection tv and recently the red tube picture has been arcing downward on the left and right sides of the screen. I'm not really sure how to describe it but the red image is distored, arcing downward, and kind of twitches. Using the autofocus won't correct the problem. Is this a convergence issue, would replacing the convergence board solve the issue? I was looking at buying this board to replace the current one: ( http://www.samsungparts.com/part_detail.asp?oldpart=BP95%2D00146C&catalog%5Fname=Parts+and+Accessories&category%5Fname=&product%5Fid=BP95%2D00415B&search%5Fmodel=HCN4226W ) Thanks for the feedback.

The top 25% and the bottom 10% of the screen turns to yellow with an arch. Therefore, only the middle of the screen with an oval shape has somewhat the correct colors and it's "framed" with this yellow hue. Also, I notice the image of the yellow regions repeats itself towards the middle of the screen in blue. Unplugged the tv for couple hours, replugged and turned on tv. The screen first look cured but the discoloration appeared again in couple of minutes.

That board, P/N Bp94-00155a should fix the problem and be fairly easy to replace. Make sure you unplug the TV before starting the repair though. Duh!

The set if projection which model here is, has arced and now each of the three picture tubes used has a tiny permanent burn mark on its screen.

That is what you are seeing, the set uses three picture tubes with screens like the old tv sets===the coating has been burnt in each, want to prove it, remove rear cover and cover any one of the three lens and that mark on one tube will go a way.

Not fixable.

Hitachi rear projection model 57f59a makes loud popping sound from time to time

Yes and it is common---the set uses 3 picture tubes and where the high voltage (well over 10,000 volts) goes into the side of each tube via a spark plug type wire (with good reason) they completely seal the rubber clip that inserts the wire into the side of the tube.

You are describing almost perfectly when one of the tubes arcs around the anode (what the opening is called--2nd Anode to be precise)

Two things are going to happen--when it pops it can instantly burn the coating off of the offending tube's screen resulting in a burn mark--usually dead center and if red tube arcs the mark will be yellow(only red and visable in that area of the screen.

This damage is permanent once it happens-----Second is that it will arc hard enough to blow some other part out in the set.

let me know if questions.

Projection TV sets are known to have two common problems. The first problem that is common to these sets is convergence failure. When this happens the TV will usually look 3D, Wavy/Distorted, etc. It may also shutdown and blink an error code.

The second common problem with Projection TV sets is dull video, halos around objects, white looking video, or red overpowers the screen. This is commonly caused by the fluid in the lens being clouded overs.

To get fixed either call in a local TV repair company or goto sites such as www.TvRepairKits.com to get a repair kit with instructions.

Samsung HCN4727W Rear Projection TV, green screen, audio works

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai2_bing.gif,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

Sony rear projection screen is red then tv shuts off

Can be 1 of 2 things. 1st the red tube just needs the voltage to it turned down. In the front of TV (you have to remove the lower front half of TV to access it) is a plastic square with 6 knobs. The from left to right top knobs control focus for blue, green red. The bottom knobs control voltage to each tube in same order (so lower right knob for red) turn SLOWLY to left to reduce voltage until excessive red and lines go away. If you over turn left or right set will turn off. If that does not fix it or if lines reappear then option 2 is that red picture tube is failing outright and needs replacement.

Convergence problem?

The convergence anp ICs are usually what go bad in that unit. They are two ICs both are STK392-040 and they are at board location ICZ103 and IZC103 on the Sub Board attached to large heat sinks. You can get replacements with free installation instructions and free on line tech support at the following link.
