There some few tips you can try. Power down the computer then open the cd tray by inserting a sharp object in the small hole near the tray. Look for this hole, then using the sharp object push it pretty hard. With the other hand try to pull the tray out. Once you've pulled it power on the computer (with the cd-rw's tray opened) and watch what the cd-rw is actually doing now. If after it retracts the tray it is doing the same, you will need to dissasemble it. If you are willing to try this, please post another message and also specify there what did the cd-rw drive do when you've applied the method i've told you before.

Whell, I don't think the actual motor is burned out. The speed on wich the motor is turning is regulated by a set of electronic components. They are a diferent part then the actual motor. To modify the motor's turning speed, they modify the value of the current the motor receives. As they are positioned between the power source and the motor, an electrical power spike will damage them, and because when those components burn out the connection with the motor is severed, the motor is "saved" in this way.
However it is easy to know this. You have to dissasemble de cd-rom drive. Remove it from the computer first. Open the tray (like before, sharp object in that small hole) then remove the four screws on the unit. The front cover (the plastic front side) must also be removed from the metal part. In the end you must remove the upper and bottom part of the metalic covers to expose the motor and lens mechanisms. There is more then one motor. One will spin up the disk, and other will move the lents across the cd surface. You'll see them both. Also there is a servomechanism (kind of a third motor) that moves the lents up and down. All 3 of them must work in proper order for the cd-rom to work. Even the failure or decalibration of one will cause the cd-rom to fail to read or write cd's.
Here's what you can do. If you dare to try, dissasemble the unit in such way that you can see the circuit board and the components mounted on it. Look very carefully at them to see if you can spot any burned out components. The black chip's, the ones with lots of pins are especially vulnerable. Check them first looking for anything unusual on their surface. If somethings is burned out or damaged, you will shurelly need the unit replaced, as no one has the spare parts to change the damaged ones in a certain model. Only by an incredible luck, but most service centers woun't even attemt such a repair.
If you see no visual or evident trace of damaged/burned out components do the following.
First check to see if the lents block is near the central motor. If it isn't, or it is located anywhere else on that line use your hand to carefully move the lents block away from the central motor (in the middle, the one who spins the disk) as far as they go. Then move them back to the central motor as much as they will go. Carefull not to touch the actual lents (blue, or white ones in the center of the lents block).
After that, assemble the unit back, power it on normally and check out what happens. If this doesn't work, your unit is damaged beyound repair. This happens pretty often when lightning strikes. good surge protection isn't allways enought to stop the power spikes that follow a lightning.

I think the motor may be burned out
I think the motor may be burned out or something (it started after lightning struck my house... but i thought it had a good surge protector) I tried what you said, but to no avail. I asked one of my friends (works for Slipstream PCS) and he told me that the motor is burned.
Can I replace the motor or should I just buy another one
(CD-Burner)?
