I am referring to DVD recording. On this particular DVD, and others I've tried since, the first timed recording as fine. The next two, right from the start, were fine as to video but the audio was in short bursts (fractions of seconds, unintelligible) with silence between them.

Gents,
Not a solution but in case it may help other's understanding with a similar problem, found glitch to be related to the default Chapter-making process within the Panasonic DVD recorder when dubbing a DVD. Default appears to be 5 mins 20 seconds per chapter, i.e. 320 seconds. Glitches from these DVDs are seen regularly on two of my four DVD players at every 32 seconds, i.e. one-tenth of the chapter length. Can't explain why this happens, or why indeed two of the players sail-through this recurring glitch without problem.

Hi I am Vortash It very much sounds like you are not finalizing your disks .. any dvd recorder that makes a disc from computer dvd's to free standing unit s work on the same software principle , however the programs do differ slightly and finalisation stanard izes the disc to run on any player, without it another recorder will either not recognize the disk or the language it is written in . Read that message at the end and you will see the option to finalize or it will say do you wish to be able to play this on another dvd or it will do it automatically if you set it to do so in the menu on some sets .
if your player isnt doing this it is not set to do so in the menu settings disks can be finalized at any time after recording providing they are not over filled as the finalization process will take up at least 10-12 mb some do it in more some might do it in less depending on the software hope this helps Regards vortash

sounds like the laser is out of synk with the encoders inside the player, to fis this you will need to disconnect everything from it, unscrew it and carefully move the lase all the way to the outside of its track, BE CAREFUL NOT TO TOUCH THE LENSE WITH YOUR FINGER, you may also wish to clean the lense while you are in there anyway. To do this dip a cotton swab in Isopropyl alcohol (the kind you use for cuts and scrapes), and roll the tip accross the lense of the laser, just let it air dry. Reassemble the player and it sould be good to go.

In most cases when the CD does not play it is possible that the optical head is a suspect. Sometimes it might pick up ordinary audio CD but will not play other formats. This indicates that the optical head is weak and so there is no detection or scanning of the CD . If the optical is working the tracks will be read immediately but with no scanning the laser head can be defective. The main motor will not work in some cases as unless the tracks are read the drive motor will not work with signal from the processor. Also in some cases the central motor base can shift and so the distance to the disc can be more resulting in low detection. You can pull up the spindle to come closer.
Sometimes certain cleaner disks will not be tracked to run for cleaning as it will not be read and so will reject. Hence it is ideal to manually clean the laser head eye using a cleaning swap /cotton bud with gentle pressure on the lens eye.
If there is no result then watch if the CD spins or tries to spin. If so the board seems to work unless a test is taken on the main board but the possibility of a defective optical head can be the suspected fault.
If any of the above seems otherwise we must recheck with possibilities of a malfunction of the main processor board
