Everytime I open MSN it kills my router. I have to restart the router and do ipconfig /release /renew and I was wondering if anyone could help me with this particular problem? Or have had a problem with this and know how to fix it?

It's not msn.com it's the latest version of MSN messenger sorry for not being more clear.

There is no error message my internet connection simply dies and then I have to restart everything to get it to work okay again.

I can?t imagine what www.msn.com could do to your system that would require manually reassigning an IP address. If you can you supply a few additional details about you?re problem perhaps we can assist: -what url are you going to. -what error message are you receiving when you go to the web site. -Any other pertinent information.

Also I would hold off loading firmware other than what was released for the States until you are in desperation mode. There are other issues besides the warrantee you need to consider. Similar equipment sold in the States and overseas often have different functionality and features that tailor the device to conform to local laws and requirements.

I haven't tried this particular router, but make sure you have the latest firmware installed on it. If yo're in europe it usually is released later than in the US, but you might try the US version of firmware anyway, it might work. It WILL void your warranty, though.

Going inot the router configuration page and reserving your computer with a specific IP address would resolve this issue, If you have never gone into the router config page, it would be reccomended that you not do this, and have a computer savvy person with networking experiance do this for you.

another solution would be releasing and renewing your IP address in the command prompt on your computer

in command prompt, type : ipconfig /release ENTER then ipconfig /renew to renew your ip address, this can be done rather than resetting the router everytime

Cannot get wireless conection to laptop

Hi Sheila,

First thing you can do is a ipconfig /release /renew
to do that, go to:

Start>All Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt.
Once thats open, type in ipconfig /release
note, there should be a space between ipconfig and /release and renew
your ip address should come up with 0.0.0.0

Now type in ipconfig /renew
remember a space between ipconfig and /renew
You should see an ip address of 192.168.XXX.XXX or 10.10.XXX.XXX something like that, depending on your network settings.
if you do, you should be able to get on the internet.

If you see an address of 169.254.XXX.XXX
Then it would be best if you powered off the Modem and the Router.

First turn off the Router, Next the Modem.
Power back on in reverse order and see if it is able to connect then.

If all that fails, You can reset the router and see if it will connect then.
You should have a reset button on the back of the router.
Remember once the router is reset, you'll have to redo the security settings.

Hope this helps!

Everytime I restart my computer I have to run the connection diagnostics to get access to the internet. I am running windows xp with an AT&T gateway 2 router.

Cut power to the router.
Reconnect it, and let it start-up, for 2 minutes.

Restart your computer.
Click Start
Click Run
Type CMD and press ENTER.
Type IPCONFIG /ALL and press ENTER.
Record the information, e.g., 'IPCONFIG /ALL > temp.txt'
Type IPCONFIG /RENEW and press ENTER.
Better? Worse? Same?
