The unit fails to read CD?s or DVD?s. Generally it will either continue to display reading indefinitely or sometimes it will ?restart? and display welcome, then try to read the disk and go in a loop, reading, welcome, reading welcome???? with one DVD it does recognise it as a DVD and plays 11 seconds of the info and then restarts to welcome.
SOURCE: DVR-S120 doesn't play any cd's
I have come across one DVR-S120 that has a shorted spindle motor. This is the motor that spins the disk. Therefor the unit will not play a cd or dvd. Yamaha sale's the complete dvd Assy. for $300 witch is absurd.

maybe cleaning will make it work for a while. but basically your lens started to get poor focus and weaker laser. it has to be replaced.

I had a similar problem...the machine, which had been great up until then, started to be very fussy when loading a disc; using a lens cleaner did not help at all.
I opened the disc tray and used a can of "air duster" with the straw attachment blowing in lots of air into every little nook and cranny that I could reach, especially in and around the actual lens area. The liquified gas under pressure must have been too cold as, at first, there was no improvement whatsoever when I tried playing a disc. However, the next day the player was working perfectly again.
It is worth a try.

Had similar problem..used pure ethanol with a cotton bud on the lens for cleaning. Its been working ok for a while..But my problem is not 100% fixed yet as it still gives me hassle on ad adhoc basis. Maybe the solution of Seanrm might be a much better one....

The lenses of your dvd has a dust on it. You need to buy a cd cleaner , or you have to open the dvd and locate the lenses. Clean the lenses using cotton buds with alcohol.
