Sony DSLR-A100 with display issues

I have a Sony DSLR-A100 with display issues. The camera will take a picture and store it on the memory card, but the display does not allow any navigation of files or menu options. It just gives a quick display after photo is captured and that is the only time the screen has anything displayed. It also seems to be coupled with an intermittent lens/ focus issue as I occasionally here a series of unusual "flickering" followed by loss of auto focus functionality.

SOURCE: MY MEMORY CARDS NO LONGER

Hi! I just had the same problem with my Sony A100, when I tried two different CF cards. Thinking the camera is broken, I checked online camera repair sites and also called Sony directly. Sony's flat rate, and that of PrecisionCamera is $228 to fix CF card failure. Then my daughter said, "the CF card in my room works fine in the camera" - and lo and behold - it does. The CF card that works is brand PQI and is marked Hi-Speed 60 2Gb. The cards that do NOT work are marked SanDisk Ultra II 1.0Gb and SanDisk 128 Mb. So my advice is, before you give up on the camera as broken, try a number of different CF cards first.

The second cause of CF failure is if someone has pushed a CF card in the wrong way. That can bend one or more of the tiny metal contact pins in the CF socket in the camera. Look carefully to see that all the pins are straight up. [I don't know how one can straighten these pins, or if the whole socket would need to be replaced...but at least you can determine the cause of the CF failure.

Best regards - Michael

SOURCE: Sony Alpha 100 gives error message when attempting to take pic.

Hi! I just had the same problem with my Sony A100, when I tried two different CF cards. I was getting the same error message as reported above: "Unable to use card" then "Format?" then that format fails. SOURCE: The lens kit of my Sony DSLR A200 produces noise

If it's in continuous auto-focus and doing it, then it is just not locking on to one thing and jumping back and forth between two objects that are very close together in distance and it is normal. It should stop in manual, single shot or single point auto-focus. Sony uses Nikon auto-focus technology and my D-300 with a 70-200mmf2.8 will do it if I turn the auto-focus tracking time(lock-on) all the way down with the auto-focus in full auto.

Is the new card "cheap"? If so, it may be too slow to keep up with your camera.

Well, the good news is that there's probably no fault with the camera itself. It could be something as simple as the CF card being pushed in the wrong way. A look through the user manual will likely help you get to the bottom of your issue:

No image when I take a picture

Have you opened the camera and checked if there is a memory card in it? If there is, is it the right one. If it is try putting in a new card.

Camera takes too long to load pics, which delays taking more pics

Questions to ask yourself...is the card almost full of pictures? Is the card "cheap"? Is the card less than a class 4. When was the last time you formatted the card in the camera after downloading the pics from it? How are your batteries?

I have had my sony for about 2 years and suddenly last night while shooting pictures, the message "unable to format card" appeared on my screen - what can I do?

It's just the memory card. This error message comes up when the card sustains damage to any degree. Did you lend your camera or card to anyone or put the card into the wrong reading drive by accident? It may be time for a new memory card/stick. Exchange it if it's still under warranty.
