If the turntable tray is positioned and seated properly, it is probably a failing turntable motor. You can find usually helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your base model number (without the suffix) here: http://tinyurl.com/gv383 If you or a friend decide to work on it, we have *critical* safety and disassembly info at our site, which is linked at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

To check if it is the turntable, take all that out of oven. Put a tiny microwave safe dish in and see if it will heat up some water.

Probably IS the turntable if there is no thumping in this experiment.

GE Profile Spacemaker XL1800 microwave turntable

The turntable system consists of the motor, the coupler, the turntable support with rollers, and the tray.

You can see and hear a video of how a turntable motor should sound when you rotate it by hand.

If yours is not set to be off via the control panel, and it won't rotate or it sounds like it's grinding, etc., you may have a bad motor or plastic coupler.

To replace either, you need to unplug power, then remove the bottom cover of the oven.

On some, you have to cut the motor cover off with snips, then use a screw when reassembling it.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number from the tag on the oven here.

Ge spacemaker microwave jvm1640cj03 stopped heating. interior always clean. light, timer etc working.

If it stops heating and the other parts of the oven still work, the problem is with the magnetron circuit. If it makes a loud buzzing noise when you try to heat the food, then the magnetron has shorted out. The replacement cost for the magnetron is almost as much as a new oven, so it does not make sense to have it fixed. Sorry.

It suddenly won't heat anymore. Turntable still

depends on make and model could be a capacitor issue or a control panel issue

Microwave makes a thumping sound then no heat

sounds like the hi voltage diode or capacitor are intermittant, the thump is the transformer drawing current when the magnetron tube calls for hi voltage to operate, you will see the lights dim slightly every time it cycles the mag tube for heat

Whirlpool otr microwave

Once i opened up the microwave, I found that some kind of capacitor or something (had two wires going to it) had fell down on top of the fan. I had to rig the plastic mounting bracket and re-attach it to a panel inside. That took care of the rubbing noise. It turned out that some one had unplugged the wire that powered the turntable. That took care of that. it seems to work fine now. Steve

GE SPACEMAKER MICROWAVE OVEN

Is it a rhythmic thumping, or intermittent, or one thump when it first starts?

If it's rhythmic, it may be a failing turntable motor or stirrer.

If it's a thump just when you hit Start or when the magnetron turns on at the beginning of the cook cycle, it may just be a common noise that they sometimes make due to the magnetic field produced by the high voltage transformer.

Please write back with more details if you need further help.
