I have a DVP642, the drive door will not open nor will it power up, there is power getting to it because the standby light is on but if you press eject or power the standby light goes out for about 3 seconnds then back on but nothing happens. I have tried unplugging then replugging serveal time but still not luck. THis is the 2nd player this has happened to Thanks Ralph
To open the drive door this is not a perfect fix, but it will allow to use it. After the unit is powered on: 1)Hit the "Open/Close" button 2)Wait a while (you will get the timing down) 3)Tap gently, yet briskly at the joint where the plastic faceplate connects with the metal top of the unitat the area situated around the middle of the dvd tray (area in the attached pic, that the red arrow points to)

What a brilliant piece of sleuthing! I train alpine ski coaches and recently took my 642 with me to a course I was giving to show a bunch of DVDs. Naturally, when you most need it, the tray wouldn't open! Disappointed, I brought the unit home intending to buy something else but, after looking around, I happened on this suggestion. The solution works exactly as described: indeed I did "get the timing down" and lo and behold the tray opened.
I took the cover off last night and carefully examined the tray mechanism. There was no obvious fault. What appears to be happening is that the edge of the top cover presses down on the top edge of the tray. I ever so slightly pushed up that section of the cover, then re-installed and all is fine now.
In my case, the unit had for about five years had an old VCR unit sitting on top of it, and I'm suspecious that the weight had caused the DVP642 to "sag" through the centre. The 'bow' was quite visible the day I took it out to take to the course I was giving.
I hope this is helpful.
