Mixer arms shake when kneading bread

The "arms" of the bowl lift mechanism on my kitchen aid mixer shake/vibrate when I knead bread dough. I am not using the mixer past speed "2", when kneading as per the manual, and I am not mixing heavy doughs (whole wheat, nuts, etc.), just standard white bread in single batches. My mother has an older version of my mixer, and hers is solid as a rock with no movement...is something amiss with my mixer?

I have exactly the same problem... My KA Professionnel 6000 HD is brand new 1 week used!! I checked the bowl ajustment and that's not the problem, the bowl is ajust at the lowest level it can be... The arm blade is moving like a boat which rocks AND it's not because the back of the bowl is not fixed: it is!!

You have not supplied a model number and the bowl lift models are not all the same. A couple of items you could check, make sure that the bowl retaining clip that engages with the dimple on the pedestal side of the bowl is not broken. Make sure any bolts/screws holding the pedestal to the base or the pedestal to the motor are tight. Even if you supply a model number I can't think of anything else to look at unless the handle is not lifting the bowl up tight enough. I think on some models the arm holds the carrier up with some pressure which would help stop the wobbles.

SOURCE: The head to my kitchen aid mixer bounces up when kneading dough

This sounds like an issue of beater to bowl adjustment, which can come out of alignment naturally over time and with use of the machine.

If the flat beater is striking the bottom of your bowl, this may cause the locking mechanism to loosen and may cause the mixing head to "bounce" during use.

Your Use and Care Guide will cover the "beater to bowl adjustment," which you can do at home in a few minutes with a flathead screwdriver.

SOURCE: I have the KitchenAid 5

hello step ..... yes. You may have to adjust the height of the bowl a wee bit as it sounds like the dough hook is hitting the side of the bowl..

It tells the steps in your manual.

Easy to do.

Hello Suzann,

I understand that you are having a problem with your Kitchen Aid 5 Quart mixer. It sounds like you have stripped the gears or the worm gear out. Although, it may not be an expensive parts repair it is not an easy task to complete if you are not mechanical enclined. There are many different little gears in these units.

My suggestion would be to take it a local appliance repair shop that works on mixers. If you can tell me the city that you live in I would be more than happy to give you the location of one or two repair shops. As the unit is so old you want to invest in a new unit and keep that one as a reminder of how long Kitchen Aid has been around.

Is 300 w mixer powerful enough to mix bread dough?

Your mixer is easily able to handle the kneading of bread dough. Please advise:

9 cups of all purpose white flour, maximum.

6 cups of specialty flour, maximum. This is any flour besides all purpose white.

Bread doughs are only to be needed on speed 2, and never for longer than 7 minutes.

This is all stated in the Use and Care guide for the mixer itself. If these guidelines are not followed, it may lead to a product failure.

Used the bread kneading hook, after 10 minutes, smoking

The mixer motor has probably overheated, as proper use and care was not being followed with the stand mixer.

Bread doughs are recommended to be mixed on speed 2 only and never for longer than 7 minutes. With the resistance of a bread dough that is provided against the beater, mixing for over 7 minutes may overheat mixer and cause smoking.

Please consult your use and care guide to refresh your memory about how to properly use your mixer for making bread doughs.

Bread hook use

Use it to the side. This will pull the dry ingredients off the bowl. If the dough is coming out lumpy, make sure you follow the recipe exactly. Putting dry into wet will give different results than putting wet into dry. If this doesn't end the lumps, try a different type of flour.

Beater jams

You are going to DESTROY YOUR MIXER by kneading dough with the flat beater. Read the directions. They spell it out in big letters. Only use the dough hook for dough; only use speed 2.
If the mixer generated enough torque to knead dough with the flat beater (it doesn't), it would tear up and overwork the dough. As it is, you're lucky you didn't strip a gear.
