Re: how do I
The signal going into the television weather it be a HD cable box or Sat Rvcr. is what determines that. The TV from there will select it automatically.

AV inputs are for standard analog video which is 480i. HDMI and Component inputs are the high definition inputs that run at either 1080i or 1080p You won't ever get 1080i or p through AV inputs.
Not the problems with a HDMI cable.U getting only 480i because the tv station u are watching are broadcasting tv signal are in 480i only.Tries difference channels like 2 CBS or 4 NBC alway broadcasting in 1080i.See,u will getting 1080i.Ur tv good,it doesn't have any problems.
You did not give your model number of receiver. Some of the ones from 2007 or so have a switch on the back for video resolution, 480i, 480p 720p 1080i so set this switch to 480i.
this should automatically be done by the tv. If you input to a standard def input (ie yellow plug) or are using standard def cable it will be 480. If u change to a HD input or an HD channel it should automatically switch to 1080. The input displayed on the tv that says 480i or 1080i is just a result of what is being played, not a setting to be changed.
Typically TVs will auto adjust to the input signal it receives. If your cable box is only outputting 480i then all the tv will show is 480i. Ensure you have a good 1080i signal going in to the unit and check again
It depends on which input you are using, but the HDMI inputs are auto detecting. Most likely whatever device you have connected is not putting out a 1080i signal, and needs to be configured to do that. Once you do, you should see the input icons on the top right briefly come up, and below the input number, you should see "1080i"
If you are using the component inputs it will select 1080i automatically IF that is what it is being sent. Make sure your device (cable/satellite receiver) is set to 1080i. The TV recognizes 480i, 480p(progressive scan DVD player) and 1080i. It DOES NOT recognize 720p. Since it has no HDMI or DVI input it can't do HD DVD or "upconvert" DVD but it does very nicely with 480p/progressive scan.
