On the TV menu check to see if the TEXT mode is activated if so deactivate it to clear the issue. This will be in the Closed Caption settings menu.

A big black box appears near the bottom of the screen when I try to play a dvd, how do I get it off?

You may have closed captioning ( CC ) turned on on your DVD player. go to on screen display or menu on your DVD player and check.

Issue with our Toshiba 50H82 - overnight it has stopped playing DVD's properly - a solid black rectangle obliterates 75% of the screen. Any idea?

Hi,
Do you see same solid black box in all inputs or just in dvd picture?
If solid box appears only with dvd picture then its generated by dvd player, check dvd player Menu and turn off any subtitle settings.
And if solid black rectangular appears in all inputs of TV like cable etc then check Close Caption feature in TV and turn off CC function.
Hope this will solve your TV problem.
Thanks.

Cannot see the screen Philips DVP5990 DVD player. Setting problem

You may have probably turned on Closed Caption on your TV. Unhook the DVD player to find out if it disappears. If it disappears then Closed Caption is on on your TV. Turn off Closed Caption. If cannot find how, give me the brand and model of your TV.

Black box in middle of screen

It's a text box for either closed captioning or demonstration mode. Go into the setup menu and turn off closed captioning. If you have trouble doing that, then just restore factory settings.

Picture problem

If you have the DVD Player connected to the vcr, it is the copy right protection software that is doing it, this is on every single DVD to defer con artist. A way to fix this, is to get a video image stabilizer, or find a way to work around the VCR. If this does not fix the problem, it is possible that the video output on the DVD Player is malfunctioning somehow
