Unable to use duplex printing on LaserJet 1020

I'm trying to print on both sides of the paper (duplex mode) with my new HP Laserjet 1020. In Properties I'm setting all the correct settings, Manual feed etc.. What I'm observing is that when I attempt printing a window appears but very quickly disappears. The printer does not print and the red led starts blinking. I am then unable to print anything else unless I switch off the printer. I think what is happening is the window that appears and quickly disappers is expecting an 'OK' from me and since there is no window I can not do this. From reading the Manual, a prompt should appear so that I confirm the paper is in the feed. Also there should appear a prompt after the first stage of printing is done. None of these prompts appear. I've also re-installed the drivers several times, but to no avail. What could be the problem/solution?

Do you have Status Messages turned off? Access the Printer Properties window. Click the Configure tab (figure 1). Re-enable Status Messages by selecting On . Power cycle the printer by turning it off, then back on. Wait a few seconds for the job to resume or try printing the job again. HP LaserJet 4000 Duplexer

I realize when I say this that you will be a little skeptical but I will say it anyway . the Paper may be damp - do you notice any curling from your print if only printed on one side? this is the easiest way to test for damp paper- while the paper is damp the Electrical resistance is much higher than when its dry and this is what typically gives a Light copy however once the paper has been though the Very Hot fuser rollers to \'fix\' the first side, the paper has been force ably dried and so the second side is much Stronger in toner. try a new ream of paper and see if that helps

HP Laserjet 2015n printer

Sir, the Hp LaserJet 2015n printer CANNOT automatically do duplex printing since the printer does not include mechanism and paper storage areas to cycle the paper through the printer a second time and print on the reverse side. Manual duplex printing can be done as follows: Choose duplex printing and remove all sheets after the printing is complete. Turn the sheets over while preserving the orientation and insert them in the paper feed path. I have an HP 1020 laserjet printer which is similar to the 2015.

Duplex printing

The HP Laserjet 4+ does not have duplex capability built in; you'd need to purchase and attach the duplex unit (HP part number C3157A) to have that option.

Depending on your operating system, your driver may support a "manual duplex" mode in which you print one side, reload the paper, and then print the other side. You can also "fake" this from many applications (such as MS Office / OpenOffice) by telling it to print only even-numbered pages, then printing only odd-numbered pages.
