I've reverted to film from unreliable and over complicated digital cameras and scan all my negatives and transparencies using an Epson Perfection 4870 Photo scanner. They're nearly as good as the latest model but only cost around £100 for a used example in perfect condition with all original accessories.
It may already be installed, if you have Windows go to the Start menu and look for Epson Scan Utility. Turn the printer on and place your photo on the glass under the scanner cover. Click on Epson scan and you can choose 3 methods. Fully automatic, home mode or proffessional mode. fully automatic is the simplest method, simply click on the scan button. For the others be brave and experiment!

the 4990 often failed to detect automatically the film. Go manual, take the film zone, don't forget to specify it in the driver (the focus depends on it), and crop manually the picture.
