Lens Error Skiing in Switzerland, two-month old Nikon S10 gives "lens error" message. Apparently not a rare problem. Is there any first aid possible (if not send St. Bernard with brandy). Love this camera, hope it's not fatal.
About 1 year old Coolpix S4, lens error all the time. Tried removing batteries for a few minutes; no change. Obviously if it's a $150 repair for a $180 camera, it's not worth it. Pretty disappointing, as the pictures are good.About 1 year old Coolpix S4, lens error all the time. Tried removing batteries for a few minutes; no change. Try shooting in manual mode with lens set at maximum (wide open) aperture. Then try at a smaller f-stop, say 5.6 or 8. If the error message appears when your lens is set to the smaller aperture, you could have a lens problem. Try another lens using the same test. If a known good lens gives an error message, then the problem is in the body. Also try zooming to different focal lengths and see if your 18-105mm gives the error at particular focal lengths. An error here would indicate a lens problem. In any case, your lens or body would have to be repaired by a professional as these repairs require major disassembly and re-calibration.
Hi! It sounds like the lens focus is stuck. If you don't have experience in camera repairs, you should give it for a repair to your local Nikon service center or other camera service center.
Turn the Coolpix S10 on using the button to the left of the 'OK' rocker which has a picture of a camera and an arrow beside it.
You may need to hold this button in for several seconds before it responds.
The camera should turn on in the mode used to view stored photos, and this may bypass the lens error message.
Pressing the button again can get the camera to switch to picture taking mode.
This worked on my S10 after I dropped it.
Hope it works for you!

My nikon coolpix s210 had a "lens error" after several months of use. The tapping of the camera against my hand did not work. Eventually i did use the method of putting my nail under the lens and pulling as I tried turning the camera on. I had to apply a good amount of force and was afraid i would break the camera, but after doing this several times, the lens did click back into place.
This is probably THE single most common failure among digital cameras. There's a halfway chance of fixing it yourself, described here: http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html
Get the kit changed. That should not happen right out of the box, but make double sure the next time around, you charge the battery completely before using it the first time. Not doing this can cause problems.
Dont know if this will help anyone. I had a lens error for ages. In my long lasting devotion to google serk I found that many equall contenders found that a strike with a soft book in different directiions solved the problem. I ended up beating the camera from all angles with the palm of my hand. But hey! it worked. 4 months later im looking for the cure to system error 2. If you can help wi that one.
