Question about Maytag 24 in. MDBH950AWS Built-in Dishwasher
My Maytag Jet Clean dishwasher stopped cleaning dishes. It goes through the complete cycle but without any water being delivered to the dishes. I removed the lower wash arm and all parts down to the chopper. Before removal, the impeller seemed to be binding somewhat. I also removed several label pieces, pieces of some broken dish, and a twist tie from various parts in the tub. During assembly, the impeller turned freely. With all parts assembled, the machine fills properly with water but there is no washing action. I can hear a noise from the motor but it is apparently not turning. Do I have a burned out motor or a failed motor starting capacitor?
SOURCE: Diswasher motor making noise during wash cycle
It could be the impeller on the motor. The impeller fits over the shaft of the motor and might have split/broken up. That funny noise is probably the shaft spinning inside the damage impeller. Fortunately the impeler is fairly inexpensive and easy to replace. I believe there are one or two parts/covers to remove that are held in by a roughly half dozen torx screws.

Problem solved! The original chopper blade/impeller adapter, which screwed onto the motor shaft and had a flange and metal bearing to press against the boot seal below it, was made of nylon or some similar plastic. Whether due to miscellaneous trash or normal food residue impacting the chopper blade or just inadequate strength, the threads on the adapter were completely stripped and the motor just ran without turning the impeller.
Maytag now has a seal kit with METAL adapter (called Motor Shaft Sleeve) instead of plastic. The kit includes a new boot seal, two differently threaded adapters with seal seat cup, and a different chopper blade to fit the new adapter. Available from www.partselect.com and includes installation instructions.
When selecting a wash cycle, the appropriate lights come on. But when the Start button is pressed, all of the lights go out and a humming noise starts. No water runs or blades move, but the heater element comes on.
