OP: DEC 2017.
10 year old monitor, that has CCFL lambs. (bad idea that)
turn OFF the MAC, even pull the MAC DVI cable.
does the logo below show, (there is no screen savers in the monitor)
(yes it has 10second turn off delay with not video inputs)
black screen is the monitor brains screen saver !
if the LOGO is gone the CCFL back lamps are DEAD,
as most are 10 years old, most are. now.
upgrade to LED monitor is the cure.

I presume not tested on other working PC? to prove it does work?
MAC unplugged.
LOGO dead? (test 1)
OSD dead, (menu button dead?) (at power on 10second time out)
The OSD must work with no PC. connected. this is test 2.

If OSD menu on the monitor is dead, then so is the monitor.
power on ,the mon'tor shows logo with ACER graphic for 10 seconds time at first power on the OSD menu button must work if not the monitor is toast. if yes, this works.then......
TEST 3: Errors to screen.
then shows, NO signal, no sync, or out off range, or shows all inputs are dead, then they are. (mac is off so you must get errors)

the book shows (what i call autosleep)
is listed as 5 to 7 seconds at power on, some monitors are 10s
mine is 30( set by me to that)
but this prevents LCD burn/ghosting and also saves power.
so use the OSD menu during that power on time frame to test just monitor all by its self.
on a good PC the mon. menu button works full time, all the time
PC not in sleep mode.
KNow that, 1280 × 1024 (60/70/75 Hz) standard resolution
this is the max RESO.
if you mac is set higher, as most are, then you get
OUT OF RANGE errors, (monitor brain errors)
ok>?
page 17 in the service manual below covers all supported resolution.
The monitor is really just junk grade, for 2 reasons.
poor RESO
and CCFL doomed, most are dead now, those lamps.

power on the monitor this must be presented, this logo
if not set brightnees and contracts first. in menu buttons. on MON.

Hi, maybe DVI cable or port is faulty, to test you could use VGA port , in the following picture you can see installation of monitor.

SOURCE: Acer AL1916W 19" problem

Hello mat78, Unfortunatelly the problem is hardware based. You will need to have the monitor repaired in a service center. Here's why: LCD/TFT monitors don't produce light themselves. They are composed by a matrix of transistors (TFT - thin film transistor) that have the property to reflect or allow some light (certain wavelenghts)to pass through them. They don't produce light by themselves. Instead there is a fluorescent tube (neon like) light inside the monitor and that's the light source used in order for you to see what's on the screen. A flourescent light is suposed to last pretty much, i don't think yours has a problem, you say it works for some seconds or so. Instead your problem is most probable with the inverter circuitry that powers on that light. It's a common problem among these types of monitors but in your situation i don't think it will be an expensive repair. In the case that the screen is dark (in a dark place you can't read or view anything on it) but if you apply light to it ( a flashlight or something) and you see something, then the problem is most likely to have occured with the invertor. Try to ask at a local service center for a repair, this shouldn't be an expensive procedure. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: connecting dvi cable straight to acer monitor

The cable box is probably outputting a resolution the monitor is not compatible with. Computer monitor and television resolutions are usually different, and not cross compatible in some cases.

For example, wide screen monitors are usually 16:10 aspect ratio, while TV is usually 16:9 aspect.

The AL2216wbd is a 1680x1050 display, while HD TV is either 720p (1280x720) or 1080i (1920x1080).

If your cable box is set to 1080i that would be too high for the monitor. You will need to set it to output at 720p, and even then you will probably get a vertically stretched picture since the monitor has a taller aspect.

SOURCE: My monitor displays images in stetched full screen format

the description you gave was the long way right click on my computer, select properties then device manager, you will be in the same place but lots faster, plug and play does not identify the monitor or its compatible display resolutions, right click on the desktop select properties then display settings, go into advanced tab and look at the monitor, and the adapter, you can play with the setting until you find one that works, 1400 x 900 may not be supported by the video card(adapter) so that may be why your loosing the video settings.
hope this helps.

Specify: what sort of computer are you using? PC? Mac? Android?
What OS version? Windows 7, 8, 10? Mac version?

What kind of input connectors are on your second monitor?
What are you trying to do with the second monitor? Simultaneously see a second app beside your other monitor (extend)? See the same exact image as the other monitor (duplicate)? Send the same/duplicate image (duplicate screen) to a projector, or send a different image to it (extend)?

Hi Bobby
You will need to get an OS X installation DVD. Try eBay.Don't go for anything lower than 10.4 (Tiger)10.5 (Leopard) and 10.6 (Snow Leopard) should run fine on this machine.Don't bother with 10.7 or 10.8

hello benjamin,
first of all we have to be sure the monitor is really working (it's murphy's law!) if this is 100% then might the resolution is set on snow leo too high? this can also cause the problem.

Hi,how do I know wheather I need DVI or VGA cables to connect CPU to a Monitor.I sold monitor when I got laptop now I want set up the Dell Dimension 3100 as aback up,so I'm looking at wide sreen monitors...

Most of the Widescreen monitors come with DVI as well as VGA connector. A VGA connector and DVI connectors are different in many aspects. First of all the DVI connector would be white in color and VGA would be blue.
VGA connector has 15 pins and DVI has 24 +1 pin

Input not support, Acer V193w

if the monitor is DVI conencted to PCI card, the computer will not see the monitor, on boot up, only in the Windows mode.
replace the DVI connecting with a VGA connection on the monitor, if there is no VGA connection on the monitor then you need to get a VGA monitor and connect that to theVGA port on the motherboard connector at the rear of the computer.

Running two external monitors

Okay. Thanks for the info too...

I looked at the user's guide for this laptop and see exactly what you're saying.
I found it here: http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/MacBook_Pro_Users_Guide.pdf

So, the laptop comes with a DVI to VGA adapter because the only port on this system that will allow you to connect an external display is one that connects to a DVI port (in short, you don't have a VGA port).

moz-screenshot-3.jpgmoz-screenshot-4.jpgOkay, you have a couple of options here:

  1. You can purchase a docking station which, depending on where you buy it from, will be more expensive than the other options. If you decide to purchase one, first make sure that it will provide the ports that you need. For example, my docking station has one DVI port and one VGA port. If and when I connect a second monitor, I will connect it to the DVI port using a single DVI to VGA adapter (as I don't have any flat panels that connect directly to a DVI port). 63efdf2.jpg If you purchase the docking station, make sure it has both the DVI and VGA or you're stilling floating up the same creek without a paddle.
2. You can't use the cable that came with the laptop because it only connects to the DVI port
of your laptop with one VGA connector on the other end, therefore, supporting only one
external monitor. You need either a DVI to DVI and VGA adapter or a DVI to VGA and VGA
adapter
.

Okay, now that we covered that information, let's get down to business...
Since you already have your monitors and probably don't want to spend $200-300 on a docking station, this is the best and quickest solution:

You have two monitors both with VGA connectors. Your laptop has 1 DVI port on its side (correct?).
Look at the image of the DVI to VGA and VGA adapter. You need to purchase one of these. It will allow you to connect one end to the DVI port on the laptop and connect your monitors to the two VGA ports on the other end...viola!!

You can use the DVI to VGA and DVI adapter but it would complicate your situation unless you were trying to connect a VGA and DVI monitor so we can eliminate that option unless you are desparate and that's the only adapter you find to purchase.

These adapters are very inexpensive (probably anywhere from $9 to $19. You should be able to purchase them at a store that sells computers, hardware, software, etc. You may even find them at Wal-Mart or RadioShack. If need be, you can purchase one online. However, if you go out and search a couple of stores or computer places, you should find one and be able to connect your monitors when you get home.

Feel free to leave any comments if you need further information.
