I don't personally know a lot about these systems and whether or not they are reliable enough; however I came across a great video on youtube explaining the difference between various companies that sell these items and which ones are deemed most trustworthy in today's market.

Which Home Alarm System Features are Right for Your Home?

Just like asking what the best car to drive. It all depends on what you are trying to protect. Each security system is custom and with that, you will need to know how many layers of protection you need. Sensors on doors and windows, yes. Do you need glass break sensors, motion sensors, do you have pets?

Scanro Electronics - Home Security

I don't know why you need a manual for it. You didn't describe a particular problem, but it has all the sensors from your home security wired in plus your phone lines. It can be upgraded to connect your hvac system to it also.

Is it worth it to get a home alarm system or can I just install one of those DIY ones?

I think its worth the money. DIY systems are not so reliable and you always have false alarms-stressful. If you don't want to spend money, buy a fake alarm system box online. Then it just looks like you have an alarm system which should scare off any burglars.

How is a wireless system different from a hardwire security system?

Wireless systems are much easier to install. It really depends on the place you want to secure. Two-story homes are ideal for wireless due to installation ease. On the other hand, one-story homes and business may be more suitable to hardwire systems. There is no difference in the operation.

Using DTIM with digital phone service

It turns out that because Comcast uses VoIP, the Simon can't use it to call in reports. I ended up having to switch monitoring companies to one that specifically uses internet monitoring. The solution was to buy/install a wireless g bridge into the phone output on the alarm panel, and then connect it (wirelessly) to my home network. No major problems since then.
