Question about Canon PowerShot S1 IS Digital Camera

3 Answers

Image issues I turned my camera on the the image being displayed by both the lcd screen and viewfinder are being distorted. Lines, blurring and vivid pinks and blues on the screen. Photo's saved in the memory display correctly but anything new i try to takes comes out exactly the same as the image on the lcd. Doesnt seem to be anything in my user guide about such distortions and i thought i would run it by you guys and see if its something that has come up before. Any help or suggestions you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Is there a way to restore the camera to the factory settings just in case one of my kids has played with them?

I have this problem too. I hadn't used the camera for a while, so I thought it was a battery/warm-up issue but I couldn't figure it out.

I have a similar problem of a black screen since yesterday. All other functions are 100%! I can assure you I did nothing wrong and I am the only person to ever touch it.
PLEASE, any help will be appreciated.

My camera is apparently having the same issue......I bought my camera new 3+years ago, so no longer under warranty. Is this the recall problem?

  • Oscar47 Apr 02, 2008

My Canon PowerShot S1 IS suddenly shows a distorted image on display and on the recorded image. Thanks for pointing to the service notice from Canon that mentions a free of charge repair of the camera, not only in USA but also in other countries.

  • Anonymous May 05, 2008

I also have the same exact problem with distortion, exactly like the picture shows. I tried everything, I should have saved some time and viewed this website first, would have saved a lot of aggrevation. I will be bringing the camera back to Best Buy and see what they say.

    Hi,
Thanks for maintaining this great site! I have the same problem, my pictures in the S1 IS look pinkish and completely blurred with some white lines like static running across. Photos taken earlier show up properly on the LCD though. From all your descriptions, it looks like a CCD problem. Will have to try and see if there is a service centre in Bangalore or somewhere else that will repair this for free.

  • mickeylad Sep 20, 2008

i have a similar issue. when viewing through the screen all is fine but when the shot is taken, image turns pink and fuzzy. thought it may be batteries losing power but now does it all the time even with freshly charged batteries

Ugh... same problem. Any other solution other than call Canon?

  • Anonymous Nov 18, 2008

exactly same for me, am trying the canon service warranty dept. (even though it is 4 years old) as they apparently are repairing this free of charge. Thanks everyone, as I was ready to throw the old one away, ugghhh! $600!!

I have been facing the same problem toofor some time now. There is another thing that after I keep the camera on for some time, the view becomes normal and then the camera functions normally. Is it necessary to send it back to Canon for repair or it can be fixed with firmeare upgrade?

  • Regard May 11, 2010

Can't see thru the view finder and LCD is burred and vivid pinks and blues on the screen. Camera was working just fine in Sept. Tried to use it in late October and it wouldn' t work. I can view pictures stored in camera just fine but that is it.

I just had the same problem happen to my camera. Distorted images but the previous pictures on the same card were fine. I called the Canon tech line as instructed above and they are sending me shipping labels by email also. Should be able to get repaired in 7-10 days per the rep that assisted me. Everything for free!!!

My camera was working fine. I removed the batteries for about a week, and when I powered it up next, my view finder was distorted just like the above image. A ten minutes phone call with Canon and I'm waiting for shipping labels and a repair form to be emailed to me. I was told the repair will be free if the Canon techs determine that it is the CCD image sensor.

Your camera may be subject to a recall by Canon. Take a look at: http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=PgComSmModDisplayAct&fcategoryid=225&modelid=13390&keycode=2112&id=29819 That page includes contact information.

S1IS canon camera

Hi,

Apparently the vendor-supplied CCD image sensor used in this Canon digital camera may cause the following malfunction: When the product is used in recording or playback mode, the LCD screen and/or electronic viewfinder may exhibit either a distorted image or no image at all.

To determine if the CCD (image sensor) is working properly, follow these steps:

1. Insert a memory card with known good images on it into the camera.

2. Power the camera on to the Playback mode.

3. Press the DISPLAY (DISP) button to enable the LCD panel, and observe
the LCD.

a. If the images are displayed properly, please proceed to step
four.

b. If the images are not displayed, or a "NO IMAGES" message
appears, please ensure that the memory card contains known good images.

c. If the card contains known good images, and the issue persists
with a second memory card, the camera will require service.

4. Switch the camera to the Camera mode. You may use any shooting mode
(i.e. Auto, Manual).

5. Press the DISPLAY (DISP) button to enable the LCD panel.

6. Point the camera at a well-lit scene and observe the LCD and/or
viewfinder. If the scene the camera is pointed at appears on the LCD
and/or viewfinder, the CCD is operating properly. If the LCD and/or
viewfinder remain black, the camera requires service.

Effective immediately, and regardless of warranty status, Canon will
repair, free of charge, products exhibiting the above-mentioned
malfunction if the malfunction is caused by the CCD image sensor. Canon will also cover the cost of shipping and handling in connection with this repair.

Regards.

Vertical lines and distorted colour on display screen

Just as I got on line to this site I saw your problem being typed in and it's the exact same issue I am having with my Finepix 5000. I've owned it for all of 4 plus years with no problems and really decent photos. I'm getting a blurred image with green/magenta colors when I look through the viewfinder. When I take a photo, it shows the same. It wasn't dropped or even barely touched between the last good photo taken and this. Attached is an example of above description. I would appreciate any advise. See below.7ccd05c.jpg

Sony DSC-W70 LCD Problem

You will need to describe what you see on the LCD in more detail in order for me to tell you what the problem is. There are two different issues that can cause things like what you are seeing. 1: Cracked LCD. You will see lines which resemble cracked glass. You will see bright vivid colors with specks of black or stark white all over. The image problems may be only in one portion of the screen. The LCD is made of glass, so if you look closely and see patterns that look like broken glass - this is your issue. Replace the LCD. 2: Bad LCD connection. You will see distorted colors, the screen may blank out and flicker when you shake the camera or press on the housing near the screen. If neither of these describe what you are seeing, post back and give more details and I will respond further. David Millier Advance Camera Repair

In camera mode, screen shows a blend of image and digital spectrum analyzer bars blurring the image

the ony way is to get the CCD replaced with a new one. Contact NIKON for free replacement as this comes under manufacturing defect.
