Image transfer to computer

It depends on what software you are using to transfer photos from the camera to your computer.
If you install and use the "Camera Window" transfer software Canon included with the camera, you will see you have three modes to choose from, including the option to transfer just the photos on your camera that have not yet been transferred.

Connect the camera with a USB cable to your computer.
Power up the camera.
The computer will detect the camera, and open a dialog box offering you a choice of programs on your computer that can handle photo transfers.

If you choose the Camera Window software, it will open and present a menu with three choices of action. The first option is, "Import images from Camera." Select this.

Another submenu opens presenting these three options:

1. Import Untransferred images. (this is what you said you want)
2. Select images to Import. (manually select just certain ones)
3. Import All images (automatically transfers every image on the card)

Camera Window is just one of many available image transfer applications you could use. They all do essentially the same three things outlined above, including "Import Untransferred images."

Canon included a couple other utility programs on the CD that came with your Powershot A490 camera. One of them, "Zoom Broswer EX" enables you to reload photos from your computer, back on to your camera's image card, if you want to do that.

Try restarting your computer or try it on a different computer, "Busy" usually means something is preventing your computer from reading the camera. If that does not help,try calling Radio shack or Staples.

You are better off to simply remove the card and either use your built in card reader or obtain a external USB card reader and transfer your images that way. All you have to do is open 2 "My Computer" windows. Simply drag your photos from your card to your C: drive.

Using the Camera

* 1 Attach the USB cable to the camera. Open the small, rubber door on the side of the camera body and plug the corresponding end of the USB cable into the slot on the camera.

* 2 Plug the USB end of the cable into the computer. Make sure the cable is securely attached to both the camera and the computer.

* 3 Turn the camera on. This will open software to download your images. You will be able to move the images from the camera to the computer and choose whether to remove the images from the card.

* 4 Select the option to download or transfer images. This will depend on what type of operating system you are running and may vary if you are running third-party image processing software, such as software that came with your camera.


Using a Card Reader

* 1 Turn the camera off and remove the memory card carefully.
* 2 Insert the card securely into the card reader slot.
* 3 If necessary, turn on the card reader. This will open the software to remove images from the card and place them onto your computer.
* 4 Select the option to download or transfer your images.

Do what the pros do...use a card reader.

Transfering shouldn't be a problem. But why transfer from your computer to a Flash Card (I'm assuming Compact Flash Card) to transfer to a DVD player? You could easily just transfer the images straight from the computer to a DVDisk so that it can play in a DVD player.

There are Three primary ways to do this...

1. use a (usualy supplied) data cable... normaly a USB cable... it connects to your computer/laptop , Use a Photo utility program to "find" the camera. You should be able to view the pics stored in the camera.

2. If the camera pics are stored on a sim card then simply put that card in a multi card reader... (very inexpensive to purchase and standard on some late model PC's) and in most cases you can pull the pics directly from the card.

3. Take the camera directly to walmart or walgreen's photo station and they usualy can pull the pics directly from it.

Transferring the images Follow the steps below to transfer images from the camera to a Windows XP computer. Step one: Connect the camera to the computer

1. Turn off the camera.
2. The camera came with a special USB cable for connecting the camera to a computer. Connect the large end of that USB cable to the computer. Figure 1: Connect the USB cable
3. Open the rubber door on the side of the camera and connect the small end of the USB cable to the USB connector on the camera.

Step two: Transfer the images Choose one of the following methods to transfer the image files: Method one: Transfer images with the HP Photosmart software

1. Make sure the HP Photosmart software is installed on the computer. If the software is loaded, then go to step 2. If the software is not loaded, click here to upgrade to the latest version of imaging and printing software (in English).
2. If images on the camera are selected for printing or selected for HP Instant Share destinations, make sure the computer is connected to a printer and the Internet.
3. Turn on the camera. The HP Import Photos software starts on your computer. If you have set the software to automatically transfer the images in the camera, the images automatically transfer to the computer. Otherwise, in the Transfer images from Camera/Card screen, click Start Transfer . The images are transferred to the computer, and then if there are any still images that were previously selected for HP Instant Share destinations, those actions are started.
4. When the Image Action Summary screen appears on the computer, you can disconnect the camera from the computer.

Method two: Transfer images without the HP Photosmart software If you do not, or cannot, install HP Photosmart Software on your computer, you can still transfer images from the camera to the computer using the Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP) in Windows XP. Follow the steps below to transfer images.

1. Turn on the camera. Windows will automatically launch a program to transfer the images.
2. When the images have finished transferring, disconnect the camera from the computer.
3. If you encounter problems, check that the camera USB Configuration in the Setup Menu is set to Digital Camera .
   1. While in Live View , press the Live View/Playback button, and then press the Menu/OK button.
   2. Scroll to the Setup Menu using the left/right arrow buttons.
   3. Use the up/down arrow buttons to scroll through the Setup Menu to highlight the USB option.
   4. Use the left/right arrow buttons to change the setting to Digital Camera and then press the Menu/OK button.
   5. To exit from the Setup Menu , press the Live View/Playback button.
4. Reconnect the camera to the computer.

Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.


The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.


Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program such as Picasa.
