Question about Sony DVDirect (VRDVC20) DVD±RW Dual Layer Burner
Sure hope someone has a solution to a real problem with the Sony DVDirect, VRD-VC20 writer. I purchased this about a year ago from Best Buy. It worked fine until recently, when I tried copying home movies and pre-recorded programs on the digital cable box. I have done nothing different, other than load a clean DVD into the machine. When it is finalizing the disk, it keeps giving a "finalize error" message and ejects the disk. I've been using the same DVD's that I had been using in the past (which worked fine), but I'm totally clueless to what's going on... If anyone has an idea how to solve this, I'd really, really, appreciate it. I DID upgrade the firmware about one month after buying it, and had success with the 16x DVD's. Have a pile of disks that are worthless, and am about ready to give this device the heave-ho. The reviews on Epinions.com were not very kind... Sincerely, Dave
I accidentally finalized a disc on the wrong settig using my sony dvd mini dvd camcorder...I got a disc error message. Is there anyway that i can retrieve the info off of it or re-finalize?

I ran into the same thing with a Panasonic DVR. In spite of the finalisation error, the data will have been written to the DVD unless you also get a write error along the way. So I just took the unfinalised disk, popped it into the DVD drive of my computer, and used my burning software to extract the data track as an ISO. After that I was able to pull the .vob files from the image with Winrar and create the DVD with authoring software. Roundabout but at least it did the job. Still don't know why the DVR suddenly stoped finalizing.

I'll tell you guys a few things I've noticed about this device. First off, using DVD+R makes all the difference. I have not had a single problem using these. Second, you need to make sure your cables are all plugged in correctly. One sound error or video slip-up means it will not burn or will have an error.

Hi. I had aquired one of these units to move my home movies from VHS to DVD to reduce space aboard lost to all the tapes. I had the same frustrations - with home recorded movies. I was using "Sony DVD-R". Some had finalize error and some record error. The unit is supported on Sony's site, but it shows that there is no firmware update. Back ashore now, the unit is one year + old, has made 3 disks successfully, and is not going to be warrantee'd because of the time elapsed before I was able to return to do anything about it. I will test it as an archive drive and decide if it is worth the space.... By the way I am an electronic design Engineer. That does about nothing to help with these new products!

I had similar problem (I have same model of Sony) on my dvr trying to record some movies, in my case it would start recording for a sec and then it would stop, problem in my case is that some of channels on satelite are scrambled and id doesn't allow even that they were stored on my dvr to get them on dvd drive, you can get descrambler on ebay but I just gave up cause it's too much hassle. Maybe you have similar problem cause I don't know who is your tv provider. Does your drive work on pc??? If so probably it is protection that is messing with your finallazing! I hope you find this helpful! By the way check my problem if you have any idea how to solve it I would very appreciate it! Nick
