I have a GE Side by side, about 3 yrs old. Just recently there has been a loud whinning noise coming from the top of the freezer, i open the freezer and it sound as if the fan is running fast then slow and will not stop. I have unpluged the fridge only to have the same problem days later.
I am a multiple victim of the same issue. The true problem is probably the fan motor. Mine was replaced twice already and is noisy again. I had a GE tech look at the issue, along with the frost/ice build up in the freezer and the erratic temp control in the fridge. Nothing was done for me under warranty and now I am paying. It seems to be a defect tha GE will not admit too, although a class action suit addressed some of these issues and the owners were compensated. The problem is my serial number was not included in the settlement. I am sure that GE/Hotpoint will never stand by these issues and we must learn to stay away from their products and any sub companies they own. Just bad business in America again!
Matt, this model has a main board in back that controls the operation of the evap fan. This is a two speed, DC motor and the fan takes a least one minute to change speeds. Therefore any speed changes in less than a minute time is abnormal. I usually find that the board is causing the problem. If you're handy with a meter you can do some tests. On harness J2 on the control board (just below the top harneses) check the DC voltage on pins 3 and 8 reading from left to right. There should be at least 12VDC. If you find a fluctuation of voltage, your board is giving you the problem. Catriver...post back
