If the lid switch wiring was arcing to the metal frame of the washer, you should have had the circuit breaker tripping. Also, you may have damaged the contacts in the timer or the lid switch. Arcing to the frame would be obvious; the bare wires would have black or melted spots, and so would the sheet metal right next to the wire.

Bare terminals (but not bare wires!) are common, but they are shrouded or otherwise isolated from the washer frame. A burned switch most likely has bad contacts; this would stop the washer from running. In that case, replace the switch. An overheated switch could burn off the insulation on the wires. Repair the wires if that is what you have, either by cutting them off and crimping on new terminals (preferred) or by sleeving them with heat-shrink tubing. I prefer using new terminals in this case because the originals are probably heavily oxidized and may not make a good connection on the new switch. This could cause the problem to happen again. If you don't have an ohmmeter, take the switch to an appliance parts dealer and ask if they can check the contacts (a friend in the electrical or electronics business could do this too).

Note: if this is just a case of a burned-out switch, the timer is probably OK. Lid switches don't usually burn out unless people routinely interrupt the wash cycle by opening the lid, so you may want to evaluate laundry practices in your household. If that isn't the issue, you could have a problem causing the motor to draw too much current. Right after you do a load with the new switch, feel the door switch to see if it is running hot. If so, check for excess drag in the mechanism, especially the motor bearings.

The washer doesn't spin

Possible that the belt is slipping due to overload, check the capacitor to the motor , check the belt to the motor, check if the spindle is jammed , if so reset the spindle.

Hello there and welcome to fixya
there are several things that you will need to check first ok please verrify the following
It doesn't pump or spin
If it doesn't pump water out or spin, check to see if the motor is running, then proceed as follows:
If the motor is running, your washer probably has a frozen pump pulley or a broken pump belt. To check the pulley, remove the pump from the washer and try to rotate the pulley manually. If it doesn't turn freely--if it's frozen or stiff--replace it. If the pump belt is broken or looks quite worn, replace it--but be sure to check the pump pulley before you change the belt.
If the motor isn't running, the lid switch may be defective. If so, the washing machine can't spin and may not function at all. The switch is inside the washing machine main housing near the door frame. Often you have to raise or open the top or front of the washing machine to get to the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it.
It pumps, but doesn't spin
If your washer pumps out the water but doesn't spin, check these:
The lid switch may be defective. If it is, the washing machine doesn't spin. The switch is inside the washing machine main housing near the door frame. Often you have to raise or open the top or front of the washing machine to get to the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it.
The motor coupler may be broken. Many Whirlpool®-manufactured washers use a small, relatively inexpensive motor coupling. It's plastic and rubber and is mounted to the shaft of the motor on one side, and to the transmission on the other. Over time, the coupler wears out and fails. You may need to replace it.
A belt may be broken. Many washing machines have one or two belts. If a belt is broken or badly worn, you need to replace it with a genuine belt from the manufacturer. (Some washing machine belts are designed with special characteristics not found in automotive belts.)
The clutch may be worn. If your washer is a GE, it may use a clutch to come up to the proper spin speed. As the clutch wears out, it may prevent the unit from spinning well or at all. If the clutch is worn, you need to replace it. For this job, you probably want to hire a qualified appliance repair technician.
The drive motor may be defective. Many washer brands use a reversing motor. For agitation the motor runs in one direction, for spinning and draining, the other. It's possible for a motor to burn out in one direction and continue to operate in the other. If this happens, you need to replace the entire motor.
The transmission may not be shifting properly. Older washers produced by Whirlpool® have a transmission with an electro-mechanical shifter. If the shifter becomes even partially defective, the unit may drain the water but not spin. This is a complex system, if your washer has a shifter problem, you may want to hire a qualified appliance repair technician to repair it.
The spin bearing or basket drive may be worn or seized. These components allow the inner tub to spin freely inside the outer tub. When this is the problem, you usually hear a loud sound during the spin cycle. Call a qualified appliance repair technician.
It spins only with the lid closed
For safety, washing machines are made so that they spin only with the lid closed. The lid switch prevents the spinning action when the lid is up.

My Ge Hydrowave doesn't know what cycle it's in. It agitates when in spin cycle and doesn't spin at all.

Hello,

That problem with your washer sounds like its the mode shifter solonoid,To check it use a multimeter set to ohms and measure for appx. 98 ohms on that solonoid coil.

What you can try first though is to reset the motor control baord and that remedies so many troubles with the Hydrowave washer. This tip i wrote will tell ya how to reset the motor board.

I have a GE Top Load washer model # EWA 5600G. The washer idiot light indicates the washer is in the wash mode, however nothing is happening, tub is full of water, but no adigation....motor is not...

Hello, welcome to FixYa.

I understand based on your post you have a GE topload washer, model EWA5600G, correct ?

The most common problem which manifest in the manner you've described is the lid switch. I don't know what you've done aside from what you mentioned, "Tub spins freely, belt is on, motor is not running." but I'd suggest checking the switch.

The motor should only come on in the spin cycle if no water is present...if it is indeed full of water and ready to cycle then it will come on as well.

If you do not have motor action present at anytime no matter where the cycle is, I'd be suspicious of the lid switch. Have you tried by-passing the lid switch and testing it in spin ?

As you can see there are many possible scenario's that may prevent the motor from operating, a timer, a lid switch, a pressure switch and of course the motor itself. That's getting ahead of things though.

Let me know what results from by-passing the lid switch and perhaps that will get us moving forward again. Good luck.

Regards,

Macmarkus :)

Actual model is WWA3650SALWH

JUST A QUICK SUGGESTION FOR YOU ... ON MOST WASHER MOTORS THERE IS A SMALL RESET BUTTON ON THE MOTOR ITSELF. TRY RESETING IT ... IF IT RESETS AND POPS RIGHT BACK OUT OR IS JUST FLOATING THE MOTOR IS MORE THAN LIKELY BAD OR ... YOU MAY ALSO HAVE A CAPACITOR START MOTOR. THE CAPACITOR IS UNDER A COVER ON THE MOTOR ITSELF THAT CAN BURN-OUT OR GO "OPEN CIRCUIT". THEY ARE REPLACEABLE. IT SEEMS YOU HAVE CHECKED ALL THE OTHER CULPRITS I USUALLY SUGGEST. I HOPE I COULD HELP OUT.
