Sony Tv PFM-42 V1 doesn't show any picture or tv menu

This is a common problem with plasma tvs You did not mention whether you could generate any sound like through your dvd player or something like that. Whether you have audio or not makes a difference on which board may be causing you the problem. Just because it does not have a picture for tv viewing does not mean it won't produce some type of sound through your av1 input. Try it and I'll try to be more specific.

Cannot even find where to plug to aerial point into the sony plasma flat panel display tv PFM-42V1

PFM-42V1 has no ability to receive channels through aerial / cable.
You can hook direct video cables from dvd player, vcr, PC etc.

Sony PFM-42V1N

The display processor, and or the panel itself, and or one of the ribbon interconnects, may be the fault. This can be rather expensive to service. You can send the set to a Sony service center for a quotation. You may find it very expensive to service.

1inch line from top to bottom

The black line indicates that either the flex cable that connects the panel to the buffer board has come loose or the panel is bad. Try to reseat the connector located inline with the symptom seen on the screen, if it's loose or inserted crooked, the panel will show this problem. Good luck. Joe Weibel customelectronics.org
