Hi, I recently had a friend install a dvd burner in my computer as well as a cd drive. I am currently trying to burn a dvd but whenever i try to access the dvd drive it says that the device is not ready and that the device is not accessible. The drive is a sony dw-q28a and my computer runs on win98 any help would be much appreciated as my friend can't do anything for about 2 weeks.
basically i am a novice so all i can say is i am using realplayer and have downloaded a movie to burn. When I try to burn it it automatically reverts to the audio drive and says that the file will not fit. I have tried to run it through the D: drive which is supposed to be the dvd drive but I always get a message saying that the drive is inaccessable or that the route path cannot be found. much appreciated.

Be aware that depending on your source for the movies and where you live copying movies to DVD may or may not be legal. What you want to do may not be as straight forward as you may think so having said that I?ll need some more information: - What format is the movie currently stored on your PC in (real movie, mp3, etc.)? - What do you want to do with this DVD once it is created?RealPlayer does not support burning or copying DVDs: http://real.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/real.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=4500

What operating system do you have? The drive is fully supported by XP onwards and should be auto detected. You may have to delete the current driver in device manager reboot & Windows should install a compatible driver. (Start > right-click computer > properties > Device Manager > DVD Drives > Highlight faulty drive and delete > reboot)
Also, WinXP does not allow you to burn DVDs unless you have appropriate burning software installed (e.g. Nero)
It sounds like the problem is your hardware, the current optical drive you have installed cannot burn disks, not matter what software you download you will not be able to do this without the correct hardware. You will need to buy a new drive that is Read/Write capable from a local computer store.
Check whether the CD/DVD drive has been detected/recognised in device manager. Also check the device status in device manager. Try to install the latest drivers for CD/DVD drive will solve your problem.
some drives ( multi-Drives ) will read and write CDs but Only read DVDs.
Also check that the Drive supports DVD- Or DVD+ Disks.
Check that there are no yellow Marks In The Device Manager. to Do this:- My Computer/Control Panel/System/Device Manager to ensure all drivers are corectly installed.
Open Device Manager, click the + sign next to DVD/CD-ROM drives. Right-click on the drive and choose Uninstall Driver. Shut down your system, and restart. When Windows starts it will detect the new hardware and install the software for it.
Also, try uninstalling your burning software, restart, and re-install. It may be that the software has got corrupt.
Hope they work, and let me know if they do or don't.
in window under my computer is your DVD writer shown as DVD-RAM drive, if not then re-instal the drivers for your DVD.
If its installed as DVD-RAM then right click the DVD-RAM icon in the my computer and choose properties, under the recording tab select enable recording, try burning a cd using the windows xp based roxio by sending your files to the DVD-ROM.
If it burn a CD this way then all you neec to do is use a different CD burning application software.
It may be a dual laser type burner and the dvd laser has faulted, you can try using a cd/dvd cleaner to clean the laser.
Otherwise try:-
Go to my computer>properties>hardware>device manager and look down the list for your cd/dvd drives and click the '+' sign then highlight your dvd drive and right click to delete.
Restart the pc and windows will find the drive again automatically and install the drivers
