Temperature flucuates from 0 to 32 F or better while the manual temp is set at #5 (a la factory) with 1(least cold) to 9(coldest) range, the unit is about 1 1/2 years old, frost surrounds fan and it is a frost free unit. also , there is ice formed on the back inside wall beginning in the uppermost left hand corner and settling down on the bootm where there is at least a sheet of ice over and inch thick covering the entire bottm platform

Check behind and underneath for dust buildup, sounds like your compressor needs cleaned on the outside, the dust is causing it to overheat and retain condensation, hence the ice buildup. Easy thing to check, good luck.

SOURCE: Ice forms on copper pipe under freezer off compressor

it sound like your unit has a bad sensor on it or a leak. you should never have to add refrigerant to a unit unless theres a leak then it has to be repaired firdt the recharged.

SOURCE: Upright Frigidaire freezer with warning buzzer on constantly

If your'e positive the temp is ok then your freezer cold control may be bad. Slowly turn it toward off. If the compressor doesn't cut off before it gets to off, the control is probably bad. Test it here>http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/refrigerator/refrigerator.php

Frigidaire freezer compressor is hot to the touch and not cold inside

If the compressor is hot, then the temperature inside the unit may be compromised if there is a sealed system issue or a restriction in the unit. Call a professional to be safe.

This unit was purchased new 61 months ago. First instance of any problems, ever, today it seems food isn't being kept frozen solid. We suspect the compressor is having a problem. There was no sound...

Yes it is a very big concern. It sounds to me like your condenser is dirty and the compressor gets hot and goes off on overload. You can tell by putting your hand NEAR the compressor.Be careful as the compressor can be very hot

Evap coil eventually freezes. But it will maintain 10. The boar

It sounds like you may be low on refrigerant (freon). One way for a novice to check this is to look at your compressor. There are two line coming out of the compressor. The comressor is the black thing about the size of a bowling ball under your freezer behind the grill. The small line coming from the compressor to the "radiator" behind that lower grill should be very hot coming from the compressor. The big line going into the compressor should be very cold to the touch. If that is not the case you are low on refrigerant. Without gauges and a supply of refrigerant you can't fix it yourself. Second thing to check is the thermostat is it set all the way to cold? If not turn it clock wise 1/5 turn and watch to see if the temperature goes down.

If this is a self defrosting freeze, then it is normal to periodically see an elevated reading during a defrost cycle. At 20 degrees, it was probably ready to complete its defrost cycle and come back on to return it to your cold setting.
