Fan wont kick on

My unit has been running great for years then all of a sudden, the unit. Won't kick in when the power is turned on from the thermostat. I can hear a loud electrical buzz from the air conditioning unit, but the fan won't start up and run. Any ideas would be appreciated. It's an Intertherm unit, model CNS36BAVAA

SOURCE: Air conditioner is not cooling. The fan is running. When I turn the thermostat past 7, the unit shuts down. Any ideas? Low on Freon?

Sounds like a leak to me - if you have a set of guages available (know anyone working in the refrigeration field???) you could tell this for certain.  Otherwise, try running it when it cools down outside and see what happens.  Take a stick thermometer, and put it in between the fins on the INSIDE condenser coil.  If they get cooler, but not down to about 50 degrees, then you are low on refrigerant.
Good Luck!

SOURCE: I have a GE central air conditioner model

If you are talking about the indoor fan it is probably a bad capacitor. Replace the fan motor capacitor. And YES, if the fan motor needs replacing too, you can DO-IT-YOURSELF.

SOURCE: I need help with a buzzing sound in my air conditioner.

It is probably the compressor humming. They can make some funny noises especially on start for a while. If the unit is not cooling it may be the start capacitor or the comressor may be locked up.

Do you know what could be the problem?

All the motors including the compressor on the outside unit have start/run capacitors. These can fail and when they do, the motors wont start

Fan won't run / won't cool

It may have a faulty compressor relay or overload, best to change both at the same time. It's either that or a bad compressor.

Compressor tries to start but won't ...odd odor when fan runs....approx 8 year old unit... will trip surge protect power strip, but not 20 amp circuit..

IT PROBABLY IS OUT OF FREON AND AS IT TRIES TO START DUE TO THE LACK OF REFRIGERANT AND OIL IN THE LINE IT SHUTS OFF OR IT COULD BE A BAD STARTING DEVICE ON THE COMPRESSOR THAT POPS THE POWER TRIP.

Its possible that the contactor that closes to start the outdoor unit is not pulling in and passing power. You are hearing the coil humming since it is getting control power. Also first check that breaker for outdoor unit is not tripped

When the unit is turned on. I can hear the AC pump kick on and run. But the blower fan motor will not turn on at any fan speed. No setting on the AC will get the blower fan to turn on?

Sounds like then fan has died or the run capacitor has die. All motors that run on single phase mains need a capacitor to start them spinning. These are quite cheap & simple to replace usually - worth just replacing if you feel you can't test it. Looks a bit like a 'D' cell battery with 2 leads hanging out. Could also be that the unit is not cooling/heating and the temp sensor will not activate fan until heating/cooling coolant has passed room temp. - Rick

Yes the unit will get fairly hot. If you can keep turning it up at some point the fan should kick in, if it doesn't then it need looking into further.

Unit won't turn on

WHEN A COMPRESSOR FIRST STARTS TO RUN THERE IS AN INITIAL HIGH STARTING CURRENT(30 AMPS PLUS),BUT THIS SHOULD DROP BACK DOWN TO RUNNING CURRENT PRETTY QUICKLY.IF IT MAINTAINS THIS HIGH STARTING CURRENT FOR A WHILE THEN THIS GENERALLY INDICATES THE COMPRESSOR AT FAULT,BUT!!!!! ALSO CHECK TO SEE IF THE FAN IS NOT SEIZED. DISCONNECT THE FAN ELECTRICALLY THEN RUN THE UNIT. IF THE STARTING CURRENT MAINTAINS APPROX 6 AMPS THEN THE FAN IS AT FAULT!........HOPE THIS HELPS!!
