You need an air gap/ siphon break. Gravity is a strong thing. Most
washing machines
have the pump at the lowest portion of a washer. They provide a drain
hose with each washer. If the drain hose is not properly mounted
according to shipping instructions, gravity will cause the water to
flow out the machine as fast as it comes in. You must have the hose at
least 30 inches above the floor to prevent this. A common question I
see a lot is: Water goes out as fast as it goes in? Or it fills and
starts to wash and then shuts down and fills a little more and then
starts up and shuts down. This is the water draining out the machine as
it begins the tumble action. The hose is not on the floor but it is
still not high enough to stop the siphoning. Other causes of siphoning
is cramming a drain hose down tightly into the drain. Some drains are
so strong they will actually pull the water out the machine. To prevent
this sometimes a tech will install an anti-siphoning device. Consult
your owners manual.
