Copy following link to see analog vacation timers that turn lights on at random times.
Set current time slightly different so lights inside house can turn on-off at slightly different schedules.
Rotate dial to set current time, plug timer into outlet, make sure bulb is good, turn light ON, and plug light into timer.

Multi-function digital timers, such as Woods 59377, and lifetime-warranty Intermatic DT620 also have vacation feature, and timers have 2 outlets, but programming is more complicated than using analog timer.

I need to know how to operate my GE 50462 timer switch

This timer cannot be programmed.
Timer has pre-set program to turn lights or appliances on-off at random times so home looks occupied. GE 7-Day Random Vacation Timer turns lamps or appliances on or off during late evening and early morning hours, confusing potential burglars.
Rotate dial clockwise until current day and time lines up with pointer, and plug in.

Brinks 42-1009 ez vacation timer instructions

The Brinks 42-1009 EZ Vacation Timer is preset with 7 full days. You cannot choose when it goes on and off.

To set, spin the dial (clockwise only) until the arrow in the upper right of the center face is near the current day and time. Plug everything in and switch the upper tab to the right. On certain days, it will turn on in the early morning as well as evening or late night.

You cannot choose when to turn the light off. However, if you are home, you can turn the light on by switching the upper tab to the left. Remember to switch it back to the right in order to activate the timed on/off periods.

How to program residential timer mod no 49750/tm261a

49750 sounds like a Woods timer number, but I can't identify for sure
Woods makes timers for many other brands that are sold under different numbers

Amazon shows First Alert tm261 random vacation timer
http://www.amazon.com/First-Alert-Tm261-7-Day-Vacation/dp/B000P6W4OE
If this is not your timer, then add a comment.

First Alert tm261 random vacation timer is similar to GE 15151 shown on following page.
GE 15151 has a manual
First Alert appears just below GE 15151
http://waterheatertimer.org/GE-timers-and-manuals.html#vacation

A vacation timer cannot be programmed.
Look closely at outer edge of dial and see that dial has small plastic protrusions that stick out.
These protrusions are trippers that cause timer to turn lights on-off at random times so home looks occupied when on vacation.

I need a plug-in timer that I can turn something ON for 5 minutes every hour. What can you suggest? Henry

You need a 60 minute cycle timer capable of running 12 cycles per hour.
Usually this type of timer is heavier duty for commercial applications like garden irrigation or misting, stock feeding, or cattle barn ventilation. Commercial applications require reliable long-term product with higher price.
Average mass market plug-in timer is lighter duty, and is used for turning on indoor lamp or outdoor christmas lights a few times per day. These timers are inexpensive 'corner store' items priced at 6-15$. There would be no mass market for for a plug-in cycle timer as specific as your requirement.

Intermatic makes a panel-mount digital cycle timer you could wire to short extension cord.
http://www.intermatic.com/products/grasslin/electromechanical

Tork ACT cycle timer is less precise, but could be wired to short extension cord:
