I've had the dvr for 2 years and this week the remote quit working but only while the dvr is recording. I was watching a recorded show (while watching something started to record) and I couldn't delete, pause, exit, or anything. When the show ended, the usual "do you want to delete" screen didn't come up, instead I got the grey fuzz flashing then the system shut itself off. Any ideas? The only thing new I've noticed are advertisements in the guide, maybe it's a programming thing.
I have the same problem with my dvr. I went to tech support at sony. The tech spent a lot of time researching the problem. I had to leave so I told him to email me when he had some information. It's been 3 days now and I havent heard from him yet.

Resetting the Recorder to Factory Settings
1. Make sure that the recorder is on
2. Press and hold the STOP button and STANDBY/ON button.
The recorder turns off with all settings reset.
Believe it or not, this could be a simple battery problem in your remote. When my battery is low in my remote, some buttons will work and some not. I'd try replacing the batteries in the remote first. If that doesn't work, I would guess that you need a new remote. Sounds like your DVR works fine manually, so chances are that's not the problem.
Hope this helps.
If this is a TV2 location take the remote to the location of the DVR.
Open the door on the right side of your receiver.
Press SYS INFO.
Press Record multiple times on your remote.
Exit the screen and see if the remote works, if not replace the batteries and repeat steps 1-4
If the remote still doesnt work, and this is a tv2 location (no receiver in the room with the tv) check the antenna on the back of your receiver, make sure that it is connected tightly and standing straight up.
If none of this works call Dish and ask for a new remote.
Follow-up to the person who quoted from page 29 of the manual: Not sure if this will work w/the particular remote you have, but for the remote that ships w/RDR-VXD655 you can change the command mode in which it is operating by holding the Enter key on the remote and pressing the respective digit appearing in the LCD. In your case that means while holding the Enter key, press 1.
It is now working. The DVD is below a Panasonic TV. We blocked the tv remote sensor and the DVD remote started working. We have unblocked the tv sensor and the dvd remote is still working. I'm not sure what was wrong or how exactly we fixed it.
Hi. I have one of these units with the same problem
Mine will play audio CD's OK but DVDs are troublesome. I asked around on various forums and it appears that the DVD laser in the unit has failed or is on it's way out. (There are usually 2 lasers: one for reading normal CD's and one for DVDs).
I have noticed that my unit gets quite hot when in use and has very poor ventilation. Unfortunately any build up of heat can cause the laser diodes to malfunction and eventually fail and I think that's what has happened with mine.
If you still have a guarantee on your unit you could try and get it repaired otherwise it will be an expensive job and it may be cheaper to get a new unit.
