It's likely that the Playstation models are different in the fact that versions were backwards compatible. Meaning that early PS3 models were able to play PS2 games.
BUT that was phased out and now all currently manufactured PS3 models do not play PS2 games.

"The 80GB PS3 is not capable of playing PS2 games. There is one model (the one with the chrome trim) that can play a PS2 emulator, but never an actual disc. The only two made that can play PS2 games are the out of production 20GB and 60GB"
Alternatively, available in the PS store are PS2 games that have been remastered to play on PS3 through download and others like the God of War series and now ICO have been made available to purchase in disc form.
