Sounds like a Electrolytic capacitor has failed. Search backwards from the speaker connections inside the unit to the main PC board. Replace the first ones that you come accross that are linked with the speakers.
David, rest assured you can purchase a VOLTAGE CONVERTER and use it overseas to adapt to other voltages. I would recommend you pick one up at any electronic dealers or check online as to what is available, GOOGLE: Power Converters Be sure to obtain one close to the wattage your unit requires
