Can't format or create partition......

I have a Maxtor 250gb, model number 7Y250P0. I can not create or format the Maxtor drive. When I start the computer with this drive as master, and put in my XP cd for installation, the usual blue screen shows up. Prior to installing, one is expected to choose a partition to install the OS on. Well, that list of partitions is all empty and I can't create a new partition either, I receive an error message instead. I tried with starting with the disk as slave as well. It takes about five minutes for the computer to start with this drive in. When looking through My Computer, the Maxtor drive is not there. Not in computer management either. Wath I think is that there is something wrong with the sectors, but I haven't found a decent sector repairer which works. Does anyone have any tips on good software or another reason for the problem? It's a shame to let a 250gb drive be wasted like this.

I have tried this drive on another computer as well, I had the same problems there.

With CS, do you mean that I should put the jumper in CS, because I have already tried that, it did not work.

I have tried Maxtors diagnostic software, it did not work. I received an error message there as well. I tried with formatting it via the maxtor software, did not work. I also tried with Writing zeroes, it got stuck on 0% and didn't continue.

So you could say I have already tried those methods. Any other tips? Could it be the Sectors?

No, it does response. The Harddrive does turn on, and some diagnostic software do find the drive. But it just can't be formatted and made in to a drive. I have tried with only one software to repair the sectors, it was very, very slow. Do you have any other tips for software I can use?

Seagate and Maxtor have merged.

Download DiscWizardSetup, from Seagate this will allow you to setup the drive for windows. I just purchased 3 drives and could not get them to work until using this program.

It maybe that your motherboard bios cannot support 250GB and needs an update, but caution applies here. The other problem maybe that you need to use the hardrive on the 'CS' (Cable select setting). Lastly if you already have a pc running, use this drive as the slave the go to the Maxtor website to make use of the diagnostic/formatting and partition tools.

If it were bad sectors, then they would easily be written over or repaired, but as there is no response in any way ten i would think the hardrive platletes are damaged or the power side is faulty.

HDD NOT WORKING PERFECTLY

I'm confused. Is the maxtor drive 250GB? Have you partition it to 30GB? Or is it that the computer only reads 30GB instead of 250GB? Does this drive have Windows on it? Also you might want to check your BIOS (Motherboard input/output system) by pressing Del key or F12 and see if this drive is the startup Drive. If you don't have Windows on this drive, make sure it is NOT the startup drive. Hope this helps.

My new Western Digital Desktop PATA EIDE 3.5 Inch Internal 250GB Hard Drive only shows 127GB on My Computer. I am running XP SP3 with IDE Connectors. Is the Mother Board too old to handle that many...

The motherboard BIOS most likely have a hard drive size limit. Yes you can create two or mare partitions to use the rest of the hard drive space.
Go to Control Panel - Administrator Tools - Disk Manager to create a partition and format this partition.

Windows 7 does not recognized it

Your external hard drive likely has no partitions so Windows has no drive to mount. Follow these steps to create and format a partition for your external hard drive.

1. Press Win+R to open the Run command.
2. Type "Control" into the dialog box.
3. Double-click Administrative Tools.
4. Double-click Computer Management.
5. Select Disk Management under Storage.
6. Find the 250 GB External Hard drive in the right pane.
7. Right click on the drive and select "Create new partition".
8. After the partition is created you will need to format the partition.
9. Format the partition as NTFS unless you plan on booting off the hard drive, in which case format the partition as FAT32. You can also create multiple partitions if you want.
10. Enter My Computer and you will now see your external hdd.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa.

MY external hard disk maxtor is not detected

Is this a new Maxtor external drive? It came with a CD. Run the utility.

If there is no data on it that you want to save, you can also blow away the partition and format it:
Right-click [My Computer]
[Manage]
[Disk Management]
Find your external Maxtor Disk inthe list and / or graph
Right-click on the disk and select either "Format" or "Delete Partition"
(try format first) Use "NTFS quick format"

If you delete the partition, then "Create Partition" and then format.
You can assign a drive letter or accept whatever it assignes (probably Drive D)
*done*

Want to format for pc

Since you want to format it, let's blow away the partition:

1. Right-click [My Computer]
2. [Manage]
3. Disk Management]
4. Find your Maxtor in the list or graph.
5. Once you are certain, then right-click the Maxtor entry (or graph) and select "Delete Partition"
6. Answer [Yes] to the next scary question.
7. If it has other partitions, you may want to examine them and delete them later.
8. You can now "New Partition" (right-click)
9. The create a "Primary" drive and format it.
*done*

I have just bought a WD external hard drive (250GB). i plug it in via USB (2.0) and my computer will not auto install the device. i have no software with the product. help!

If you are running Windows ME, or Windows 2000, or Windows NT, or Windows XP or Windows Vista you do not need any drivers, Windows will detect any USB devices provided the USB device does not draw more power that the USB port can provide.
Your Maxtor external drive shoud have a power adapter connected to it before you insert it into the USB port.
If the Maxtor drive has not been partitioned and formated then you cannot use or see it until you do so.
Your manual should give you instructions to do so.
Basically you need to go into the Control Panel, then Administrative Tools, Then Computer Management, then Disk Management to create a partition and format the drive in NTFS file format if you are using Windows NT, XP or Vista.

Unable to see the 250Gb external drive shown on 'my computer' when plugged in

Hi - thanks for your quick response, much appreciated .........I will try again to explain!!

We have purchased a 250Gb Maxtor portable hard drive which I was told was plug and play. We have followed the instructions for connection but no drive letter is showing up and the external drive is lit up and making a constant beeping noise. The computer doesn't seem to be recognising that an external drive has been connected.
To test our computer out I have connected an 8Gb memory stick to the processor and it shows up as drive H immediately.
FYI - we have XP running on our machine.
Hope you can help!! Thanks
