Canon MVX250i zoom problem

Camera stuck in zoom mode on record and playback. I dropped the camera some years ago - sent it off for repair but the problem returned. I have a partial solution for recovering old tapes to a PC but I need a full solution really.

SOURCE: On playback of recorded tapes recently noticed

Sounds like dirty heads.
A clean and adjust of the tape path will most likely sort it out.

Your camera is really damaged. For repair, the best thing is to contact a certified Canon repair centre. They can tell you if it can be repaired and how much this could cost. Then you can decide what to do, repair, or save for a new camera.

Camera will not power up correctly

Again the same old compact camera zoom lens problems - sand in lens, stuck AF motor, chewed up plastic gears...you only have to look at them wrong and they will die... (A very cynical camera repairer that has tried to repair these damn things soo often!!) Even cameras with internal lenses like the old Nikon 950/990/4500 still have troubles with stuck motors and broken lens parts. I despair - these things are just made to last the guarantee out (if that long) and die horribly afterwards!!

Image looks with white verital striped lines in playback mode

Mine had the same problem (except the stripes are horizontal).  I sent it to Canon and sure enough it is the CCD problem that many of these have.  The good news is that it is covered under a recall and Canon will fix it free, including the shipping.

After 2 years, erratic behavior.

Lens unit problem. Either imact or sand etc in the lens zooming gearbox area. Maybe uneconomical to repair on this model if new lens unit has to be installed. ( it is shutting off because the lens does not come on line properly and so the shutter and CCD do not come on line... when this happens camera switches off. )

Canon MVX250i Zoom Problem

I had this problem on this camera. I found the battery removal rechnique seemed to work for only a short while, then the problem would come back repeatedly. I looked into just buying a new one but when I explained the problem to a salesman in an independent camera shop, he asked me if I'd just tried hitting the top of the camera. Apparently the motor sometimes gets stuck. Since the camera was virtually useless I tried this (hit it 2 or 3 times quite firmly, near the lens and by the accessory shoe). Now it zooms in and out perfectly and so far hasn't reverted to its problem state.

Must try to give the camera shop some other business - maybe when I buy a new stills camera
