We've had this drive for about a year. it's worked fine and then one day just decided to stop mounting. i've tried several different connections (firewire, usb, etc) the drive is also plugged straight into an outlet and not a power strip. the drive turns on and is receiving power, but the blue light just spins forever. eventually the blue light will stay on, but the drive doesn't show on any macbook we have. when i run disk utility the drive shows but is grayed out. any ideas, we don't want to lose all our data.

Have you tried it in another computer? I think these kind of problems can sometimes be caused by USB voltage problems, especially if your MBP has an old battery (I believe the battery is used as a power buffer to keep size of transformer down). If that doesn't work, see if you can find someone with the same HDD power supply and try switching that over. Failing that it's data recovery, you may be able to do this yourself by switching the actual hard drive into a new enclosure.

Try disconnecting the firewire/usb cable from the drive and take the drive to a quiet place.
Power up the drive and put your ear next to it. Listen for the internal disk to speed up and then click (which means it's ready). At this point you should have a solid blue LED on the enclosure.
If not, either the disk is bad, the enclosure's controller is bad, or the external power brick is bad (put your ear next to the power brick and if you hear a faint clicking sound, the power brick is bad and you can order a new one from LaCie for about $16.00.

I have the same problem with a Windows vista unit. I used this drive as a primary backup for all pictures and music and now I cannot access the part of the drive that this info is on. I can use the remaining portion of the drive for backup but can't get to the other 70 gigs of data.
