When I turn the Archos on it makes all the right noises and the green and red lights flicker and flash in all the normal ways. Howveer the screen is very very dark. If you look really closely you can see a ghost image very faint in the black screen.
Have you any ideas how to solve this problem? - your help woudl be most gratefully received
I have the same problem but I find it resolves itself and will come back it seems to be when it's not used for a while, it may be related the battery being low on power or bizarely the screen getting cold!,
it's only a theory mind you more likely is a dry joint somewhere in the circuitry but an expensive repair is the only way I see of resolving this.Personally I was never offfered any insurance when I purchased mine and now regret I never pushed this point, I purchased mine from QVC.

Screen is blank?
Do you mean you won't see anything at all like the signup colorful screen that says "ARCHOS Entertaining your way" ?
If your battery is full charged (did the CHG LED green light blink when it finished charging?), and you have a blank screen, do you have a serious problem indeed. If your unit is under warranty your best and only way is contact Archos.
If when you turn it on, it takes you to the Recovery screen (white screen, usually says Code 101) then try to Format the HDD, download the latest firmware from www.archos.com for your unit, copy it from your PC to the Archos, let it finish the process wth the power supply connected, and once it's done the unit should be back working fine with the latest fimware.
But if you definetely do not see anything but a blank screen when you turn it off, your problem is more serious than a simple firmware upgrade, and you need to contact Archos tech support.
Hello: Have you tried to adjust you Green Screen control on the focus block assembly. located behind the front panel assembly. Here is a solution that might help you, turn off the green by turning off this control, make sure u look at the block and make sure you are not turning the green focus knob instead of scrn crl. Turning the control slowly to the left the retrace lines should disappear as the green video darkens. Then turn the control slowly to the right just until the retrace lines reappear, then turn back slowly left just until the lines go away. If the screen is Blanking on green tube only then you have a video blanking problem on the main signal board. Or possibly a IK bias problem. It is also possible that the green CRT is defective. The FBT is not bad because the screens are lighting up indicating you have high voltageand heater voltage which is derived from one of the secondary windings of the FB. If it is a Blanking problem i would look into replacing the A Board assembly.
im having the same problem, people say reset it and put it into recovery mode (it tells you in the quick start guide) or that didnt work for me so im trying charging it up fully. also mine makes a noise while trying to turn on, are you having this problem to?
okay, but how exactly do we brighten the screen when the screen is too dark to read?
Hi we are having the same problem with our archos. We have been to the screen brightening and its set on two and still all we have are ghost images.
Anyone got any suggestions please? Out of warranty.
I had the same problem and noticed the ghosting too.
Battery was fully charged and the problem seemed to occur when I hadn't used it for a while.
I tried reseting the unit but no luck.
I then tried switching on and then I removed the battery while it was on then put battery back on and this cured it.
Hope this helps.
