First, try plugging in any USB keyboard to your laptop to try the "problem keys" be sure it's just your laptop's built-in keyboard that's messed up.

PowerbookMedic.com sells the built-in keyboard that goes in your 17" MacBook Pro for about $85. That will probably take care of the problem, but check iFixit.com for a guide (with pictures) on how to replace the keyboard, to assess whether you're comfortable undertaking the task.

If the machine works on an external monitor, then the screen is probably bad. Otherwise, the mother board might be dead.

make sure that the connection between the charger and macbook is clean.

If the charger lights up green and doesn't change to orange, then it may not be connecting. If it stays green, the battery might be dead or improperly inserted. It may need a different sized cord -- check for proper wattage.

make sure the charger and wall outlet are working. The motherboard could be dead. It may need PRAM reset.

It probably means your hard drive is dead or severely damaged. You will probably lose all data that you haven't backed-up.

Thias can also come from a dead hard drive, or a dead backlight (screen).
The best test would be to plug an external monitor to see if something shows up. If yes, that would mean that the backlight doesn't work anymore. If not, then you have an other hardware problem (motherboard, hard drive).
You can check if the hard disk is the problem by removing it. You should then see a flashing question mark and the screen on.
