Wd52528 my dad was trying to take the captions off, but he couldn't do it, so he decided to reset his TV. When he did that, once he turned the TV back on, the screen was just snowy

SOURCE: Blue screen with white snowy circle in the middle of screen

Sounds like bad capacitors
Replacing the C9A37 & C9A38 caps or
problems with some capacitors on the pwd power board, and that it would be good to change them if they were swollen

If you have the original remote it is in the Video Button Menu. Then select CC off, Or CC When muted.

This should work for you.

Close Captioning on Dish Network VIP722 DVR Receiver

Christy Hartl,

I can definitely look this over with you. This sounds like it is on one receiver. It is possible it could be the equipment, but first I would like you to check something for me.

Go to Menu -> Preferences (8) -> Closed Captioning (6) -> Caption On/Off (1). Make sure it is selected for "CC is on." Once that's enabled, try it again. If CC's are still not showing, press 'Info' on the remote and see if CC is listed on the program. Let me know if you have any questions.

If the captions are turned off on your TV, they have to be coming from your cable box. The TV is just displaying what it's getting. Check your cable box menu and make sure captions are turned off there. Cable boxes, especially on digital systems, can prevent the TV's caption decoder from operating properly. So they need to be able to provide captioning, and I suspect you've turned it on somehow. Comcast should be able to tell you how to turn off captions if you can't figure out the menus.

I have an Orion 19"

You usually need the original remote. The trouble with universal remotes is that they generally control only the basic functions of a TV (power, volume, channel) but not much else. Without the original, you often lose other functions. You can try the front panel buttons if yours has them. On some sets the on-screen menus allow you to access caption settings.

But are you sure the captions are coming from the TV? Sure, the TV is displaying them, but if you have a satellite receiver, cable box or digital set-top box, the captions may be coming from that device. This is likely to be true if the captions just mysteriously started and you don't have or aren't using the TV original remote. These devices often don't allow a TV's built-in caption decoder to work properly, so they provide captions themselves. You may have turned captions on using that device's remote. Check the menu for caption controls.

A disturbing black rectangle is in the middle of my screeen>

This question was posted under "barcode scanners" but I'm going to assume you actually have a TV set problem. Check your TV's closed-caption settings. You probably have turned captions on and set them to "text" mode, and the screen is being blanked out where the text should go. It's easy to do this with most remotes, where there's a single button for caption settings. You can hit the button and change modes without knowing it. Once you turn captions off the box will go away.

The television stays in closed caption mode regardless of the settings. Is there a way to reset it to factory default

try turning off the caption through the remote of the menu. to reset it to factory settings, go to menu, then settings, then there should be an option to reset the tv. If this doesn't work look through your manual. Sometimes you have to hold the power button for some length of time or the menu button on the tv. if these methods don't work, tell me the model and make of the tv.
