First - re-seat the harddisk and reboot the computer. If the computer does not boot up then reboot andgo into the BIOS configuration to see if the BIOS detects the hard drive. If itdoesn't detect the hard drive then it could be faulty.
Then the hard drive needsto be replaced in the computer/laptop, Windows installed and the computer orlaptop's device drivers plus your programs etc. to get a functioningcomputer/laptop again.

SOURCE: aCER HARD DRIVE CRASH

you can easily buy a new HDD at buy.com or newegg.com but checking the old one and installing the new one are a little harder. The drive is simply a small SATA drive and can be plugged into any newer PC. Techs use a USB adapter, but if you know something about it, installing a drive isn't that hard. You may need to enable in in BIOS though.

Installing a new one is a simple matter, but then you have to install windows, which means you'll have to boot from the CD [and HAVE a windows install CD].

Good luck either way.

Noisy harddisk failed

Hi there,

This video isn't for your model, but it will give you a general idea of removing the hard drive: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2a7pwc7dl3w

Once you've removed the drive you'll need to either plug it into a desktop or get a hard drive caddy from a local electronics store.

Then you can use EaseUS recovery found here http://www.easeus.com/download.htm
to try to recover data from the drive, but to be honest, if it's actually making noise, that means it's had a head crash or something similar and you chances of getting data are pretty slim.

Thanks,

Liam.

4 Hard disk drives

After a few weeks, the information on a hard disk drive starts to become piecemeal or fragmented. It is a good idea to defragment the hard disk every week or so, to prevent the disk from causing a screen freeze. Go to

* Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-Disk Defragmenter

This will start the procedure. You will be unable to write data to the hard drive (to save it) while the disk is defragmenting, so it is a good idea to schedule the procedure for a period of inactivity using the Task Scheduler.

The Task Scheduler should be one of the small icons on the bottom right of the Windows opening page (the desktop).

Some lockups and screen freezes caused by hard disk problems can be solved by reducing the read-ahead optimisation. This can be adjusted by going to

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-System Icon-Performance-File System-Hard Disk.

Hard disks will slow down and crash if they are too full. Do some housekeeping on your hard drive every few months and free some space on it. Open the Windows folder on the C drive and find the Temporary Internet Files folder. Deleting the contents (not the folder) can free a lot of space.

Empty the Recycle Bin every week to free more space. Hard disk drives should be scanned every week for errors or bad sectors. Go to

* Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-ScanDisk

Otherwise assign the Task Scheduler to perform this operation at night when the computer is not in use.

I'd lik t restore my emacns e620 laptop to the original factory settings but I dont have the disk... can still do this?

Hi

I hope i am assumming that your emachine is an acer if so i think you can do this

start
all programs
acer
acer recovery
in there it should give you a few options to :-
restore back to factory settings
re install applications
and burn a recovery disk normally about 3 dvd,s
also to burn an applications disk 1 dvd

this is really worth doing because sometimes ones hard drive will crash
losing you the ability to then restore your operating system onto a new hard drive

please if you have the option do this before you try the restore
also try to save anything that you may of put onto your laptop that you want or need to keep
either burn them to disk or copy onto a pendrive or spare usb hard drive

also i think there may be an option to get into the recovery consol by
pressing the power up key as well as F10
some laptops are power key+alt+F10

good luck
please let us know if this has helped you
so that we may be able to help others

many thanks

Installing a new hard drive

Hi there
Underneath the laptop you will find some panels with screws in them, 1 is for the memory, 1 is for the hard drive and so on, the laptop HDD will look similar to this >>>>> b1923bb.jpeg.
They are pretty easy to replace once you are familiar with them.
If you can't find it underneath it will be hidden behind a panel at the front or sides of the laptop.

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!

Aspire 9500 doesn't start - cursor and drive indicator blinks

Generally the bios setting will be set to check the primary Hard disk for the Operating system and then move to the CD/DVD drive . It looks like your system is not finding the hard disk. Thats why its moving on the CD drive and trying to read it.

Possible issues :

1) Hard Drive crash
Solution : Nothing much. You need to replace the hard drive and reinstall the OS.
2) Hard Drive connection issue.
Solution : Open the chasi and try to figure out if the hard disc is properly connected.
3) Corrupted OS or boot file
Solution : Try to repair the OS use the OS cd and run the repair option.
4) Bios setting to treat CD drive as the primary media.
Solution : Use the F10 option in the Bios to change the primary Media.

Rate the Solution accordingly...

Acer 5050 crash problem.

It is highly unlikely its a crash......two operating systems cannot....CANNOT crash similtaneously. Its impossible! unless the hard drive you run both on is faulty BUT you wouldnt get Windows to load. Not even for a bit....you say all lights will stay if they were lit up but they some how dont stay on.........I think thats what you mean.........then you say you checked again and there were rectangles that look like a book that stopped blinking yet the power lite stayed on....Im at a lost But I dont think its a crash......only software crash it might be a hardware pronlem....
