Re: Both TV'S Blanked out, i've only had them for a year
Most likely a ruptured ceramic capacitor on the main power pcb. The capacitor must be replaced with a different, special, type or it will fail again. We have repaired a lot of them with this problem. If it is less than a year old it is still on parts warranty.

The loud noises came from the tv with a colors wheel design in it have to be replaced every few years, because the spinning of the colors wheel disc are spinning in very high speed in RPM to have it colors for the tv to operate correctly, the humming, loud motors noises and eventually the effect of the tv colors. The colors wheel disc are worn out and spinning hitting it axes motor, the colors wheel must be replaced to solved this problems.
Yes you are correct, if it isn't extraordinarily loud it is simply the rear projection of the TV. If the noise was really very loud, it might mean you should contact the manufacturer, but otherwise, everything should be fine.
Run an extension cord from another room to see if the tv still works. It sounds like faulty wiring in the living room that needs to be checked. Also, check for a tripped circuit breaker for that area of the house. Can't tell you about the repair but, you will save yourself some time by checking these things out first.
