Question about 2wire (1000-400108-001) Router

Only partial internet access

I'm having a problem with tiscali and a 2wire HomePortal 1000. I get "Can't connect to configuration server" on setup but the other bits pass and most ordinary websites on port 80 work fine but anything like logging in to a https site or doing ajax stuff fails. I notice the automatically retrieved dns servers are and and if I change them to / 7 I lose the connection altogether. The manual setting of dns servers asks for a domain name which I don't know. I've tried setting it to and leaving it blank.

I think it's something more specific I've got wrong. For example, yahoo mail. I could login the other day but not delete or retreive mail (even using the old non-ajax version). I had to go through to read anything and that obviously only shows me plain text.

Today I can't even log in. I've renamed my HOSTS file in case that was causing it. Other forum sites I can now login where I couldn't before I changed the DNS settings but still can't post. Yet I'm posting this fine.

I can't see what's different about those requests???

The solution in the end was to change the MTU setting on the router to less than 1500. Not sure why it worked though?

Same here. Keep losing the ability to log onto https like hotmail or my bank. It also wont connect to config server.

I know tiscali started having problems the end of 2006, if you try access for example and try loading the games they only work at certain times of the day. during there peak hours they have been blocking ports. John

Only partial internet i assume refers to the fact that you can get on line but on certain peer to peer sites it won't be allowed. This is because you need to open the relevant port in the virtual server option or similair. Changing the dns back to the original is advised, and selecting obtain ip address automatically. also if this is not the case regarding open ports check that your browser settings are'nt too low.

The MTU setting should normally be 1492 as some web sites are unable to transfer the site files to show there site in packets that are set at 1500.

  1. Disconnect the HomePortal power adapter from the wall socket.
  2. Reinsert the power adapter plug directly into the wall socket.
  3. Remove any power strips or surge protectors temporarily to ensure that these items are not preventing proper operation of the HomePortal.

Make sure that you are using the power adapter that came with your HomePortal.

  4. Plug the power adapter into a different wall socket in another room.
  5. Press the red factory reset button, if available.
You need to have at least one computer connected to the HomePortal that is able to access the main GUI ( You can do this by either running the HomePortal Setup Wizard software (included with your HomePortal) and following the on-screen instructions, or manually configuring the network adapter for DHCP and obtaining an IP address from the HomePortal.
Determine the type of broabdand network access assigned by your ISP. Your choices are: PPPoE/PPPoA or RFC 2684 (Direct IP).

Wifi does not connect to internet (does not pull an IP Address)

The easiest way to access the HomePortal is to use another computer connected to your home network. If the DMZPlus computer is the only available computer, you can manually configure the TCP/IP settings on that computer. Modifying the following settings allows you to access the HomePortal user interface.

  • IP address (valid IPs are -

  • Subnet Mask:

  • Gateway Address:

  • Re-run the Setup Wizard using one of the following methods if you are unable to browse the Internet:

  • Re-run the HomePortal Setup Wizard from the HomePortal CD.

  • Re-run the HomePortal Setup Wizard by going to http://homeportal/setup ( in your Web browser.

  • (For Windows only.) Re-run the HomePortal Setup Wizard by clicking Start > Programs > 2Wire Gateway > Run 2Wire Setup Wizard.

Using 1000SW, I get report of:- Connection Status DSL Signal: DSL found on Line 1 PPP Login: Login successful Internet Address: An Internet address was verified ISP Link: Domain Name Server...

When you get a 'cant connect to configuration server', dont worry about it, thats 2wire's configuration server. If you have a 1000sw, then you've been a customer for a long time and have been registered for years and dont need the configuration server. Both you and the 2wire have been configured for years. The 2wire is trying to reach the configuration server because you set it up again, im thinking you moved, changed phone lines, or changed service.

The 2wire configuration server is to set people's 2wire's up for the first time only, and even then it doesnt matter unless you call technical support, and then they can still help you by getting the serial number off the device when that happens years later.

Can not use the 2wire modem with Iprimus internet.

configure the modem first, go to, run system setup wizard, enter your system password or create a new one thru the gateway recovery password reset, check if you've got the correct keycodes as specified by your ISP, select your time zone, on ppp authentication page enter your username & password for your ISP account, then go to the next page. it will give you a page where it will try to establish a connection on you ISP servers.

Connecting 2wire router with desktop pc and laptop

hi! try to check the settings on your 2wire modem, you can do this by going to, run the system setup wizard, when you get to the ppp authentication page, check the username & password on it, it should be the one that you setup for your ISP account. as for the wireless on the desktop, it depends on the brand of the wireless adapter, be sure you have installed the drivers for this adapter. you may need to go to the client utility manager or the wireless adapter shortcut/icon on your computer screen then configure it to "see" the 2wire network. make sure wireless encryption is turned on in the 2wire modem's MDC, you can do this by going to homeportal/management, or go to

Can't get connected to the internet

As usual technical dept in all ISP's are useless and unhelpfull especially if it's not a supplied modem. (p.s. the ip address they are going on about is probably your routers address and not the ISP's address) Anyway; you will have to get into your routers settings page, as you may have to set it up manually as I had to for a friend who is also with Tiscali as the router cannot obtain an ip address automatically from Tiscali. Make sure you are connected to the router via the RJ45 network cable (Normally Supplied)and then Normally you type in something similair to or your manual for this), in your internet browser eg internet explorer. Then go through the settings using the routers settings Wizard and manually input the following. Virtual Circuit Identifier - VCI38 Virtual Path Finder- VPI0 Encapsulation Mode VCMux Authentication Type CHAP Protocol RFC 2364:PPP over ATM (PPPoA) Modulation Type G.DMT or Auto Primary DNS Server Secondary DNS Server Save settings. Try accessing internet while you are still wired, if you can you know the ISP's settings are ok and you already know each PC can access the router, you should be away.
