No Picture One of my friends gave me their old lap top. The battery is dead so after pluging it in and turning it on the system boots up but the picture on the screen is so faint that you can not see it. What do I do to darken the screen. Now my next question is I am sure that it is going to want a password and she is unable to remember it how do I reset a password without knowing what the origional one is? HELP PLEASE.

I can barley see the screen and it lights up like it is working so I will try the 'Fn' and the arrows. I will let you know how that works.

    Thanks for the help!

As far as the password part of the questions goes we need to know which password you are trying to get around. Is it: -The Windows password. -the BIOS or setup password. -The startup password that comes up when you first turn on the laptop. Let us know and we'll start up...

If it's only a brigtness problem, it's normally the 'Fn' and the up/down arrows on right side of keyboard. But if you cannot see the screen at all and it is dark the backlight may faulty, which may not be worth repairing.

Does not boot up

It would help if you gave some details...laptop or desktop, does it do ANYTHING, when does boot stop?
If NOTHING happens, you may have a dead motherboard (lap/desk) or a dead battery/charger (lap). If it beeps, you may have bad ram (lap/desk) or bad keyboard. If it starts to show Windows on the screen, but stops before the normal Windows background shows, you have corrupted files and need to repair or reload Windows.
Best answer I can give you considering you gave no info about the problem.

My system was turned off 4 times in a day for some electricity issues. and when i started it is not starting when i go to bios post they showing a error S.M.A.R.T capable but command failure. please help...

what system? my guess, is it is a laptop
and the HDD went dead, and will not boot? am i right?
if the HDD is dead, reseat it( remove, then put it back)
if still dead, does it spin up. ear to case,
No then it has no power, or is dead.
yes, then the BIOS must see it, unless dead.
if a lap top ? was it? did it have batteries? when it died.
and if those batteries are still good, will the HDD run off batteries
and not the line cord power pack.....
post, what system you have, name it and OS.

Compaq presario cq70 wont boot up

old Compaq (now HP)
https://h30434.www3.hp.com/

first screen died, now wont boot, to external VGA monitors.
Fn+F4, sure. the external command key. sure
ok VISTA, first time any one tells what OS is there, wow.
step one on all PCs lap or desk top is what,
does the screen show any text at all?
like Hit Esc to enter setup or BIOS>
we first see of BIOS is alive. it not the PC is DEAD.
zero text means DEAD PC> and NO BIOS means DEAD PC
so out comes that old useless LT battery.
useless as in , if its original its bad. most are.

you skipped step 1 here, (battery out)
and next fans work? and blow air, no lint packups. inside.
learn that PC's go dead, with overheat, can happen fast.

I have a sony vio vgn-c140g and it wont turn on

You say your battery doesn't work? Try removing it and then plugging it in with your AC Adapter. If it boots now it's because of the dead battery. If it doesn't check whether it boots with just the battery installed. It's either your adapter or your battery.

If it boots without battery, but with adapter --> dead battery.
If it boots without adapter but with battery --> broken adapter. (this can have multiple reasons, loose internal contacts, insufficient power, short circuit)

If none of the above is the case then you should contact Sony for there might be a problem with it's internal power system.
If one of the above is the case however check your warranty and get either the defective part replaced. (or if possible check with someone else's first).

I hope this helps, please rate.

Charging, downloading

your lap top probbubly has a power saving seting for your usb ports ..try changing that or pluging into a regular desktop computer... it will turn on when it is charging and show a lightning bolt going through the pickture of the battery...

if that dosent work make use of the warenty (if it is still useable)
