I had same problem and found out after leaving the battery out for an extended time (4 hours) it totally reset and worked. The initialize function on the camera did not work.

Sony Cyber-Shot 8.1 - when I turn the camera on the lens moves in and out several times and then it says to turn the power off and on again. Help

There is probably no user solution, it seems that optical lens block is wrong/damaged, the only solution is to replace it.

Error message, cant take pictures

Camera needs to be serviced. This is a common problem with sony cameras. If you have any knowledge of electronic, you could take apart and clean and lube lens. If not sony will fix for a fee, go to the sony web site, they offer a repair service. This happened to mine, it cost $95 plus shipping costs to repair. Now it works great, for how long who knows.

My Cyber shot DSCW35 SAYS THAT TURN THE POWER OFF AND TURN ON AGAIN

Yes, that never works does it? =] A better error message would be "Replace jammed lens please! ", since this is the cause of the error almost 100 percent of the time.
