I had same problem and found out after leaving the battery out for an extended time (4 hours) it totally reset and worked. The initialize function on the camera did not work.

Camera needs to be serviced. This is a common problem with sony cameras. If you have any knowledge of electronic, you could take apart and clean and lube lens. If not sony will fix for a fee, go to the sony web site, they offer a repair service. This happened to mine, it cost $95 plus shipping costs to repair. Now it works great, for how long who knows.
Yes, that never works does it? =] A better error message would be "Replace jammed lens please! ", since this is the cause of the error almost 100 percent of the time.
I had the same problem with the same camera, I took a pair of pliars and pulled on the the lens (pull it all the way out). Now it works again fine..Just like its supposed to..
