First make sure that the printer is on and the front cover and output tray are open. Next open the paper output cover by rotating it down towards the output tray. The ink cartridge carrier should move to the ink replacement position on the right side of the printer. Push the cartridge lock lever down until it clicks to unlock the cartridge that you need to replace. (The color cartridge is on the left.) Pull the cartridge towards yourself to remove it. Now open the replacement cartridge packaging and remove the protective tape from the cartridge. Push the new cartridge fully into the open spot from removing the old cartridge. (The label should be up and the copper covered sections should be down and facing forward.) Now push the cartridge lever lock up to lock the cartridge in place. If the lever doesn't move, check that the cartridge is fully forward in the slot. Finally close the paper output cover. Wait for the printer to complete the print head clean cycle before using the all-in-one.
Note: only remove and replace one cartridge at a time. Work quickly to minimize the chance of the ink system drying out after removing the protective tape.
Canon has the steps to change any ink cartridge on the Pixma MG4250 support site in the FAQ labeled Replacing an ink cartridge. The full text and pictures are available here:

I hope this helps.

I know enough to change paper, I tried several different types. I do not see how paper will cause the printer not to work. This information was not what I expected and was disappointing.

I have replaced both ink cartridges, print head, uninstalled and reinstalled program and still no ink from my i470D.
What gives?
Canon i 470D printer has been working very well for some time. I have not used it about 6 months; went to print and printer goes through all the motions, but nothing prints. Re-seated print cartridges and can see on the bottomes that there is ink in them. Performed printer head maintenance and that did not help either. It seems like the printer head is no longer coming in contact with the paper. Adjusting lever on top of the mechanism that holds the printer cartridges did not help either.
It bugs me when you don't touch something, it breaks! Any advice? JAF
I've got the same problem! The ink does not hit the paper though I've replaced both ink cartridges with new ones. Could someone please advise? I've been using it regularly and the last time I printed something out was last week.
Thanks - Nanz
lost my manuel and don't know how to hook up to dell laptop computer. don't know where cable plugs go in computer or printer plus where ink goes.
